I've been a coffee nut for over 20 years. Sometime last year I really went in all the way and bought an SCAA certified coffee maker and more recently a Hario V60 pour over. It was around this time that I started getting more serious about searching for the "best" coffee. I've tried many, including local "specialty" roasters to get the freshest coffee possible. I've just continued to be disappointed again and again. Well, not now. I first discovered Caribou Mahogany at my local Sprouts - whole bean. Man, it knocked my socks off. I'm not fancy enough to describe the taste articulately except to say that it's not an exotic taste an Ethiopian or something. It's a fairly straight-forward fairly dark coffee with just a little complexity. All I can really say is for the first time in many years I'm just blown away. I'm also quite impressed that the ground coffee (I needed coffee fast and just ordered whatever could get here first) tasted quite fresh and delicious.

Absolutely the best coffee I have had....ever. I have no idea why there are the bad reviews. It's bold. It's flavorful. and depending on the size and flavor, it can be a decent price. I got the 20 oz of Mahogany for $10.43 deliver with Prime. The 40oz bags are ridiculously high priced. So stay away from that lot. I haven't tried the medium roast yet because my wife and I love dark roast. If you do as well, look for their Obsidian roast or Crossfox roast. Both are Superior to any coffee. I swear it....

Stale, poor taste in this blend, on my batch

First, this review is for the Caribou Mahogany dark roast, (I specify this because when looking at the product description, Amazon has a nasty habit of conflating all Caribou coffees into their review section.)

I often roast my own coffees, but for times when we need a quick pot, I will throw on a decent commercial blend. And, since I enjoy bold, darker roasts, the description sounded nice -- blend of Ecuadorian, Sumatra and Guatelan coffees.

Unfortunately, this coffee was far from any redeeming quality. Upon opening my bag a few days after arrival, I was greeted with no "coffee" smell; just a semi-stale smell. After three pots in a high-quality brewer, there was no standout attributes in the taste -- no presence of the vanilla they claim from the Guatemala coffee; and I wouldn't classify the body as anything to get excited about.

Judging from the smell upon opening the bag, maybe the coffee was old and stale. But, this particular batch and blend doesn't stand up to the quality I've tasted in other Caribou blends in the past.

I might stick with other blends I've bought on Amazon including Peet's and Don Pablo.

I don't drink a lot of coffee -- 1 or 2 cups a day -- but I'm quite fussy about what I do drink. Years ago when I worked as a programmer, I'd nurse a cup or two all day. Most coffee will get bitter when it cools off, especially East Coast coffee, which tends to be Robusta blends. Moved out west, & the coffee got so much better because of being Arabica. So over the years, I've tried many blends/roasts...from Starbucks to no-name to boutique blends to local roasters etc. I only drink it black, so can't depend on those additions like sugar or cream to disguise low quality (in my estimation) coffee. Had been using a local island roaster, grinding my beans, and it was pretty good. Satisfactory. But I felt there must be something better out there. Happened upon Caribou Coffee just perusing Amazon. Lots of good reviews. Already-ground, but I'm not fussy about that. Ordered a bag (great price too!) I can honestly say, this is the best coffee I can remember ever having. The flavor is robust without being pretentious. I have a cup here that I started in the morning, and not a hint of bitter. A great earthy taste that says "coffee" all day long. Congrats to the Caribou folks. This is the dark blend, of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Sumatra. I'm a fan!

Like the taste, but not the grind

I make a cold brew. That is, once a week I measure out the ground coffee into a large pitcher, fill the pitcher with water, and let it sit on the counter all day or overnight. Then I pour in through a coffee filter in a sieve that just fits it into a larger pitcher and bottle it, putting it into the refrigerator. I make it pretty strong, and I really found I enjoy an 8 oz glass (sometimes over ice) every morning. (I don't make coffee any more.)

This particular package just comes ground, not whole bean, and I've found it has a powdery residue that clogs the coffee filters. Tastes as good, but I have to use 3 filters to complete preparing it instead of one. I used to get Mahogony whole bean or ground at the grocery store and both worked. (Result is 3 quarts of coffee that lasts me all week.

I just realized this particular package has other beans than the basic Mahogony in the label - maybe that's the difference, it sure is a lot cheaper. Anyway I just bought a coffee grinder and two-pack of what is labeled just "Mahogony". It's a small amount cheaper than the grind I was buying from Amazon, but the home delivery will be worth it....I hope!

I lived in Minnesota for 18 years and I can't think of a time when I drank anything but Caribou Coffee, either from one of their Minnesota-Based Franchise stores or from the coffee maker in my own house, as I always had Caribou at home too. This Mahogany Dark Roast is Rich and Earthy and Dark and Bold... just the way I like it!!! I found it for sale here on Amazon a couple months ago and was delighted because I no longer live in Minnesota and have had to drink other brands... but this Mahogany Dark Roast is my favorite, among others that Caribou Coffee has that I also enjoy. You wont go wrong with this dark roast if you're a dark roast drinker... trust me... =)
