· If a broken piece of lead jams in the cutter, remove cutter assembly and poke out the piece with a paper clip. Do not touch the cutter gears!

It seems a little silly to be excited about something so ordinary as a pencil sharpener, but this is absolutely the best sharpener I've ever had, by a long shot.

To start with, it holds the pencils for you and applies just the right amount of inward pressure to let the blades do their thing without letting them grind the pencil down to a nub by oversharpening. Just turn the crank, and when you feel the resistance from the cutter become lighter, it's done.

I have seen reviews of similar sharpeners that have metal "teeth" that bite into the wood and leave marks -- this one has rubber rollers and does NOT damage the wood. If you don't mind bite marks in your pencils, those sharpeners do sell at a lower cost.

This sharpener does not mount permanently to a horizontal or vertical surface like a typical manual sharpener, but instead has a non-skid rubber bottom. You hold the unit down with one hand while turning the crank with the other. Since the pencil holds itself, this method works just fine.

The blade can be set for either a 0.5 mm or 0.9 mm point. 0.5 mm gives an extremely sharp point that is also much longer than what comes from a standard sharpener. 0.9 mm is closer to a typical pencil sharpener, but still seems to be more precise and clean.

I ordered this pencil sharpener with high hopes. Over the years, I have owned a number of sharpeners, most of which were pretty poor. After reading a number of reviews for the Carl brand sharpeners I settled on this one as I frequently use colored pencils as well as regular ones. Sadly, when it arrived I could not get it to work properly. It sharpened the first 2 pencils I tried perfectly, but then wouldn't sharpen any more. I had seen the pictures and videos of how these sharpeners work so I was pretty sure that I hadn't missed anything. I even asked my husband who is a mechanical engineer to have a look at it. He took it apart and examined every bit of it, but could not figure out exactly what the problem was. Eventually I ended up returning it since I could not get it to work. I can't decide if I should order another one or not. Sadly, this sharpener does not come with any English directions so it is challenging to tell if my problem was a human error or a manufacturing one.

Carl is a Japanese brand that all pencil sharpener connoisseurs rave about. I'm a big fan of Japanese stationery and did a lot of research before buying this Sweeticle model. For $15, it is a very light and flimsy instrument. The handle and the knob you turn for the 2 settings is particularly light-weight and flimsy. It's like a $4.99 product. I will keep this product for now but I'll continue shopping for a cooler and heavier, high quality model. I'm waiting for the Japanese equivalent of the El Casco $400 pencil sharpener! UPDATE: 1.5 years later: this sharpener still works beautifully so I guess it's really worth it in the long run. Buy it since I haven't found anything else better. Seriously.

Back when I was a kid....

I remember a weird schoolhouse sharpener that my father brought home from Japan about 20 years ago that had a similar mechanism. That sharpener was so smooth and easy to turn and sharpened to extremely fine points time and again. I believe my sister still uses it. That's what I was looking for. This product works and sharpens ok...but is not very smooth, sticking and slipping all the time. My children have a hard time using it. I'm not rating this poorly...it just does not meet my previous expectations for what a weird Japanese pencil sharpener should be like.

I love this pencil sharpener--it's the best sharpener I've ever used, even better than my two electric pencil sharpeners. It took me about 10 seconds to sharpen a brand new pencil, which was faster than both my battery-powered sharpener and plug-in one. The directions are entirely in Japanese (or Chinese--sorry , I can't tell the difference) so it took me some time to figure out that you have to pull out the face of the sharpener first, press a lever in the front to insert the pencil, then release--the sharpener holds the pencil by itself brilliantly. If you don't pull out the front first, it won't sharpen. The pencil comes out extremely sharp and smooth and clean--no marks in the wood whatsoever. The reason I bought this was because my electric sharpener kept sharpening my pencils off-center--I'd have this sharp point, but the wood would be sharpened along with the lead on one side; I'd have to pick off the wood so I could write with it. So far I haven't had this problem with this sharpener, even though there is only one rotating cutter inside it. I love the simplicity and superior quality of this product--it makes me wonder why we don't have more products out there on the market like this that use human power and not electricity. Seems like a waste of batteries and electricity to sharpen a pencil unless you have to sharpen a hundred pencils a day.

This is not a good sharpener for kids under 7 or 8 as the whole thing will not grip the table. Even an adult like me overextends the pencil grip almost every time, and has to reconnect it to the body of the sharpener before proceeding. I would save up my money and buy an expensive model, just to avoid the frustration.
