The lens is lighter than expected.It's also sharp crisp wth the pop that Zeiss famous for. Wide open at 2.0 to 1.8 the depth of field is very narrow. Accurate focus is a must when wide open or near wide open. But is it every worth it going wide. The bokeh is so creamy that it just might clog your arteries.Below are minimally adjusted pictures (Edited in Macphun's Intensify at 10% of "Professional" setting) The last, shot at f 1.8 shows off both the sharpness of what is in focus and the bodacious blur of everything that is not. This is a damn-near perfect portrait lens with is able to do battle in low-light conditions. You are sacrificing about half a stop over Sony's G Master 1.4, but your wallet is taking less of a hit.Materials are bit plasticky at times. The lens shade especially is a bit less than something I would expect from Carl Zeiss and the lens cap, like its brethren bearing the Sony brand, less that wonderful. The lens cap has a disturbing tendency not to catch on to the UV filter I put on the lens, and this is a solid B&W filter, not some $10.99 Chinese knock-off of bargain-basement Japanese filters. I fear that the lens cap is not long for this world and it will have to be replaced like my A series 24-70mm Carl Ziess and my E series 18-35 Carl Zeiss. It a bit annoying when the branded cap needs to be replaced by a $19.99 special by some brand I've never heard of. Granted the replacements have done the job excellently, but it would be nice not to have to replace the OEM caps so soon. And another nit to pick is that the rear cap seems to have an unhealthy attraction to the bottom of my camera backpack. It would rather rest in the backpack, instead of doing it's job of staying on the rear of the lens. I do have plenty of "battle spares" as far as camera body and rear lens caps to go around but it is a minor annoyance for the rear cap of such a excellent lens to fall short of expectations. It's like biting into a really nice cake and finding the decorations a bit off. The cake is still excellent but "Happy Bithday"? Seriously? In neon green? And purple?The lens does have excellent provision for manual focusing. There is ample space and grip for manual focusing to be quick, clean and with little drama. Autofocus is quick and sure with only the Sony system delivering some out of focus images. If you own any Sony you know they fall down a bit in action shooting, especially in Single Shot mode. Placing the camera in continuous focus presents it's own special set of problems and only the A77 APSC/Semi-transparant or the A 6300 ILC can be really considered any kind of action shooter as they both go into a full-tilt-boogie mode of 12fps.Other than the nit-picks previously mentioned, the ergonomics of the lens are just about perfect. I match all my lenses with Sony's Battery pack and the weight of the battery pack with battery balances out the weight of the Batis very nicely. The whole set up rest in my hands with minimal drama and maximum aplomb. I have very average hands for a mature male, those with more petite hand might find the combo a bit too much, those with more massive mitts might still find the set up a bit small. But for a typical adult male the Batis / Battery Pack set up is Baby bear perfect, just right all around, neither too small nor too big.There is nothing really wrong or bad with this lens, it's actually rather nice but their are off-putting niggles that prevent giving the lens the full four stars, something I have no problem giving to it's bigger brother the 24-70mm made for the "A" series SLT Sony's. Oddly enough the same annoying little niggles of the Batis are shared by the 24-70mm G Master. Are they outsourcing the odd dangly bits from the same supplier, are they sourcing their top and bottom caps from the same folks? They seem to share the same reluctance to stay on the lens. A saving grace for both lens are the wonderful lens pouches provided by the manufactures.When all is said and done this is a truly great lens, especially when one looks at the optics. Still there is room for improvement. A metal lens hood, a better lens cap and body cap are on the short list. I also wonder how long the OLED display will last and why Zeiss decided this feature would come on line only during manual focus. I also wonder why Ziess decided that an aperture ring was not needed or too pricy or the lens. I guess Cinematographers can work around this, or just spring for the Milvus. (Which is not near as fast as the Batis and is manual focus only but does provide for click less manual aperture) All told the lens is strong competition for Sony's own G Master 1.4 85mm with no real competition from Tamron Tonkina or Sigma to speak of. I do wonder if Tamron will step up to the plate and offer it's 90mm in the E mount or if Sigma will stop futzing around with the Cannon / purpose built E mount adaptor and just manufacture a per sang E mount lens in the 35mm and 85 1.4 options. Maybe later when the installed base of E mount bodies gets bigger? For now Ziess and the G Master are the two options with the Batis being the less pricey option. The buyer will have to determine if the .4 stop difference and the aperture ring on the G Master are worth the premium over the Batis It's about a half-to quarter star difference IMO. The Batis is at least a four and half star lens, but one can only review in full units, which earns the one star ding in this review. It is the little things that separate the very good from the superior and the Batis is very very good, but not quite up to a full five stars.
