An essential tool for homes with pets, the Carlson Extra Wide Walk-Thru Pet Gate is a convenient, chew-proof way to contain and protect both your pet and home. Made of an all-steel construction, the sturdy pet gate can be operated with ease and is designed to make passing through the gate frequently a breeze. If the thought of putting holes in your walls makes you shudder, our pressure-mount system makes installation simple. Because openings vary in size, this gate is expandable and ideal for openings between 29-37” and stands 30” tall. The same convenience is provided to your pet as the gate features a 10” x 7” door letting small animals pass through while keeping everyone else stays out.

The simple fix: Cut one of the pet door bars out with a reciprocating saw.
It literally took about 10 seconds per door. Then I filed down any sharp pieces that were left and slapped on some white duct tape.
Now my son can no longer get through the opening, but our cat can EASILY and quickly fit through it.
- Well constructed.
- Nice latch.
- Gate opening is narrow. I'm 6'2" 165 pounds (thin) and I still wish the gate door was an inch or two wider.
Also, you MUST use the locking feature when closing the gate (pushing lever under red tab). Our son is only 10 months old and can open the latch when it's not locked down.
I've submitted a photo of:
- Our son opening the latch when it's not locked.
- Our son crawling through the gate before I modified it.
- Our cat walking through the gate after I modified it.
- The finished gate after modifications.
The "bent" reviews:
One of the biggest complaints that I have seen with this gate is that it is "bent." There is a reason for that, compression. In order for the gate to stay in place without drilling or permanent mounts, it needs compression. If the gate was not bent outwards, you would not be able to get it to stay in the open space you'd like for it to. Once the gate is in place, use the supplied hardware to tighten it enough that the "bent" parts will now be square. If done correctly, the door will not bind, but will open and close like it is supposed to.
The pet door:
I didn't know this when I bought the gate, but the pet door swings either way which is kind of nice. The only thing about the pet door is that if the gate is not level, the pet door will swing freely. We have two cats, one is about 8 pounds and the other about 20 pounds (he is on a diet now.) The 20 pound cat can fit through this door very easily, the opening is perfect.
The extensions for this gate are pretty nice. It comes with two different sizes that slide into either end of the gate. With the opening that we have the gate in, we only needed the larger extension.
This gate stays in place for us with compression only, we did not screw the pieces into the wall to hold it. We have a 70 pound Golden Retriever that the gate keeps out of the space where the cats need to go. If you push hard on the gate, of course it will move, but if if you use the supplied hardware, that won't happen. We do not need to worry about that though because or dog does not push on the gate.
We are very happy with the gate, especially for $25. The only thing that I'd change if I could is the actual opening of the gate. It's a little smaller than I'd like, but not enough for me to dock a star or even half of one.
If you know what you're doing, or have a little bit of common sense, you'll most likely agree that this is a great gate.
I would like to express a great deal of dissatisfaction with the gate you sent. First of all, you shipped it too quickly. It got here a whole day before it was supposed to. Second, it was way too easy to install. One minute, I could get into all kinds of trouble in the kitchen: eating the kitties' food, drooling on the floor, swarming mommy when she is trying to cook--I had it made! The next minute, this gate stopped me from doing all those fun things. It was that fast. Now mommy just walks through, and I have to sit on the other side, looking sad. But that's not the worst part. The cats can just walk right through the little door in the bottom! Now, if I want to chase them, I have to wait until they come back through. Can you imagine the kind of attitude they've been giving me? I tried getting through the little door, and could only fit my head through the hole. I'm not that big either--my vet says I am only 50 pounds (although I am growing fast, being a German Shepherd puppy and all). But the big fat cat I live with, who has to be at least 400 pounds, just slides right through! It's a strange world we live in, I gotta tell ya. My human baby sister isn't crawling yet, but I will have to give you an update when she has an opinion about it. Anyways, this gate is terrible. Don't buy it unless you want your dog to look at you through the metal bars of this gate with big sad eyes. I didn't want to give it four stars, but my mom made me. I wouldn't even have given it one star. Maybe I would have horked up my food and pushed that into the shape of a star, but I would have just eaten it again, so it wouldn't have had any stars. Stupid gate.
Otis the Dog
I did have to make an insert for when she was smaller that you can see in the picture, but that's easy enough to do. I removed the mini doors because one cat is stupid and can't figure out how to swing them back open if they swing closed.
