- it's more expensive but not A LOT more expensive
- the gels are softer - makes them easier to swallow
- the gels are a bit smaller - makes them easier to swallow
- unlike the generic brand, they do not seem to stay in my stomach for a long time, feeling like I swallowed a marble
- certified by some FDA-registered lab(?) to be pure, potent and free of mercury, cadmium, lead, PDB's and a bunch of other contaminants
- no easily detectable fish smell
To conclude: this product appears to deliver the fish oil at a high level of purity, free of contaminants and packaged as a gel that's easy to swallow and digest. This is what I've been using for quite a while and I am happy enough to be staying with this brand for now.
My only disappointment with this particular order was that the number of capsules had been reduced to 300 from either 320 or 360 in our last order. Still, that didn't affect the quality, just the price!
As with all Carlson's products, these softgels are clean and third-party tested (verifiable on IFOS's website). The size is ok; not a tiny 500mg like some, but not a huge 1,200mg size like so many other high-powered concentrates. These are a do-able 1,000mg and slide down pretty easy.
The softgels are, like all of Carlson's softgels, made of beef gelatin (for those of you who prefer not to eat pork gelatin). I like how they include a smidge of vitamin E (10IU) to not only preserve the oil better, but to help you keep from being slightly depleted as you process the omega-3s.
The EPA and DHA amounts in this product are almost identical to what's in Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, but Carlson doesn't use lemon oil. You get about 80mg more omega-3 in NN than Carlson, so the difference is negligible in that way. Personally, I'd rather have clean, clear gems of EE fish oil than cloudy lemon-flavored torpedoes. Plus, Carlson's is a better value. As for NN's claim to "superior triglyceride form," it's not quite the same as natural triglyceride (TG) form. It's rTG, which is basically converted EE, which is close, but not exact. I do love the Nordic Naturals - Prenatal DHA - Unflavored - 500 mg 180 - Softgel, and take that every day as well for a little brain/eye boost.Read more ›
I toss them in the dogs food from time to time but he eats garbage so hard to tell if it helps him.
