Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Chicago sleuth Nathan Heller goes to the Bahamas, where he's commissioned to find the killer of a Caribbean millionaire and exonerate the dead man's dishonest son-in-law.

From Library Journal

Forties private eye Nathan Heller has a knack for involving himself with famous people and notorious murder cases. This time out, Canadian millionaire Sir Harry Oakes summons Heller to the Bahamas to "tail" his allegedly philandering son-in-law. When police arrest the son-in-law for the subsequent murder of Oakes, his daughter hires Heller to prove her husband innocent. True crime readers will love this version of police corruption and stupidity, name-dropping (Erle Stanley Gardner lends a hand), and doctoring of evidence. Hard-boiled but debonair.

Carnal Hours by Max Allan Collins is a work of fiction. It is however based on a real life crime....the 1943 murder of Canadian millionaire Sir Harry Oakes. This well researched novel is narrated by its protagonist, the streetwise Chicago PI Nathan Heller, a fictional character who appears in a number of Max Allan Collins books.
Most of the action unfolds in the Bahamas, Sir Harry's adopted home and the site of his grisly murder. Enhancing the interest quotient of the ongoing narrative is the presence of a number of real life celebrities. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Erle Stanley Gardner, Eliot Ness, Meyer Lansky, Ian Fleming and Sally Rand all put in appearances. Some of these historical figures really were connected to the Oakes murder case, others were inserted in by the author to add color to the proceedings.
Carnal Hours is an exceedingly interesting murder mystery. The narrative is fast paced and action packed. Collins did his homework in researching the time and locale in which the story takes place and it shows. Highly recommended.

I really like the series and have read most of them. My gripe: the author seems determined to inject some short, steamy sex episodes in each book. These are gratuitous and serve no purpose other than to establish the "ladies man" reputation of Heller, which could be accomplished without the silly detail. I'm not prudish but each time these short episodes struck me as stupid and juvenile. But the books are great and Heller's trip to the Bahamas is one of the best in the series.

Amazing book, I hardly slept after picking it up. The author does a fantastic job of putting you into the story. I'm one of those people who (for great books) imagines a voice telling me the story as I read, and I felt as if I was listening to an old mystery radio program as soon as my eyes met the words on the first page. This is a book I would read again in a few years, and I look forward to reading more of this author.

I keep reading these Heller books and writing the same review. Just a very good and well written book. You have a hard time separating fact from fiction. The skill Collin's demonstrates to weave the facts with the fiction is amazing! Read them all....

For my money, every one of Max Allan Collins' novels is worthwhile reading. He uses the actual events and names of people and places to tell a story having historical accuracy. Most of the main characters are actual historical characters who existed in reality. He weaves the story in a marvelous fabric of suspense and intrigue.

I thoroughly enjoyed this; in fact, I recently re-read it, just for the pleasure of the characters and story line. I recommend it and also intend to purchase and read some of Collins' other Nathan Heller novels.

As most of the Nathan Heller novels I have read, this one is excellent reading, suspenseful and interesting. Beside all that it gives some historical perspective to events and people we have all heard of. I really enjoyed it.
