This is the first classical recording I ever owned. It was given to me at age 10 in the 1950's. It combines an excellent rendition of Saint-Saens's great music with the delightfully silly poetry of Ogden Nash. Noel Coward's deadpan aristocratic delivery of the poetry is delicious. Imagine such lines as, "There are those who admire that roar of his, in the African jungles and veldts; but if you ask me, wherever a lion is, I'd rather be somewhere else," and "If you think an elephant is preposterous, you've probably never heard of a rhinosterus" recited with the patrician reserve of an English judge. The vinyl recording was reissued on vinyl in the 1980's or '90's. An unceasing delight from beginning to end. In Woody Allen's words, it brings back my childhood with a sudden pristine rush.

I really wanted a cd of The Carnival of the Animals,
which I've always enjoyed, but this version, with Noel
Coward is not available. So I downloaded the mp3
version, and sadly, have not been able to play it on
my laptop. Not sure what is lacking, but it's become
far too much bother to waste any more time.

I had planned to send a copy to my grandchildren,
whom I know would love it. Very frustrating experience.

I was introduced to "The Carnival..." many years ago and found it superb. Then I bought the vinyl album and about wore it out. But alas, digital arrived and I couldn't find a CD to play. Imagine the surprise when it popped up on Amazon as a fully downloaded album (now in my Cloud). It's a perfect copy. If you've not heard it...trust me, Noel Coward and Ogden Nash...what a combination...you will enjoy.

My family had this album on vinyl when I was a kid, about, oh, 50 years ago. I'm delighted to have it in digital form now! Would have wished for better sound quality, however; this sounds as if it has been transcribed from a well-worn phonograph record.
