Product Description

The train smoke drifting through the pale moon light signals the arrival of the Lancaster-Rigby Carnival. In a forest clearing, these mesonoxian visitors await your arrival. Stroll along the midway and behold wonders both fantastic and macabre from every corner of the globe. And be sure to ride their one of a kind carousel for an experience you'll never, ever forget.

Halloween Music Maestros Midnight Syndicate's 2011 haunted Victorian carnival-themed CD is one the most critically-acclaimed albums of their 16+ year career. If you enjoy the smell of fairy floss, the thrill and mystery surrounding the turn-of-the-century traveling carnival then this disc is a must-have. Winner of the 2012 RONDO HATTON CLASSIC HORROR AWARD for BEST HORROR CD AND SOUNDTRACK.

FEARnet.com (July 15, 2011) The team of Edward Douglas and Gavin Goszka have been closely associated with Halloween and the haunted house industry for over 20 years now, and last year they broke into filmmaking with their award-winning horror film THE DEAD MATTER, which featured horror heavyweights like Andrew Divoff (WISHMASTER) and Tom Savini. Their fans crave a fresh helping of Halloween goodies with each release, and the band rewards them with new material almost every year. For their latest effort, they crafted the story of the Lancaster-Rigby Carnival, which Douglas describes as a shadowy, turn-of-the-century traveling circus with more than a few skeletons in its closet. To capture the mood, he and Gavin did intensive research into carnivals of the early 20th century to try to ensure that the sounds and music work together to really immerse you in this world and the time period. Douglas also credits Bradbury's novel for much of CARNIVAL ARCANE's atmosphere, as hinted in the liner notes. 'It's a pretty wild disc, Douglas told FEARnet. 'More than ever, we really focused on using sound effects and design to pull you into the world of the disc. The music is still the focus, absolutely, but there are many times that it feels like an 'imaginary film' more than anything we've done to this point.' He also explained how the more horrific elements of the story don't surface immediately. The first half of the disc is not purely dark, he explained. However, something happens midway through and things take a pretty nasty turn. Horror fans and our friends in the haunted house industry will get a kick out of that. CARNIVAL ARCANE also features the vocal talents of Jason Carter (LORD OF THE RINGS: BATTLE FOR MIDDLE EARTH, BABYLON 5, THE DEAD MATTER) and fellow THE DEAD MATTER cast members Brian Van Camp, and Dennis Carter, Jr. - Gregory Burkart, FEARnet

Review

CARNIVAL ARCANE proves that, 14 years into their career, Douglas and Goszka are still very capable of outdoing themselves... their mission statement of 'soundtracks to imaginary films' has never been as well-realized as it has been in this outing. --Fangoria Magazine (Jeremy Webster)

A high point in the band's already stellar and legendary career... What they have produced is a memorable album that blends historical realism with the recognizable fantastic elements that has helped make Midnight Syndicate one of the most popular instrumental-only groups in the world. --Apex Publishing (Jason Sizemore)

Flat out perfection... they take their craft to another level with no looking back... a unique listening experience that is rarely seen in much of music today. --Killer Reviews (Xander Kane)

The music flows from one scene to the next on Midnight Syndicate's latest album. As always their music is more atmospheric and thus it can make excellent gaming music or even music to write by. I wouldn't use this particular CD for more private matters but it works wonders for setting a good scene if you are an author, storyteller or dungeon master.

There are no breaks between tracks but if you watch on iTunes or some other program you can get a feel for which part of a turn-of-the-twentieth century carnival you are now entering. The music has creepy undertones throughout but the dark elements vary depending on where the music is taking you on this audio journey.

The one complaint I do have as an honest reviewer is that the voice actors which should add a further sense of realism are very quiet compared to the music itself. I had to listen very, very carefully to pick out what Jason Carter, Brian Van Camp, and Dennis Carter, Jr., are saying as their particular characters. With their distinctive voices and skills it is a real shame that their voices are more easily heard. Part of the purpose of the carnival hawker is to draw an audience to each show, each tent, each display and because we can't hear them clearly but know we should from the album cover, it is disappointing.

Now there are times when the voices are mere atmosphere themselves, adding to an eeriness, as in "Goons and Greasepaint" and "Krellsig's Kastle of Fun." I really wish I could give this a half star. Rather than grade down a full star, I hope you will read this review fully and consider the entire critique and what you want to do with a CD of this nature.

I bought this music for a specific purpose, to act as inspirational background music for roleplaying game sessions, and it serves this purpose perfectly for me.

It brings out a nice combination of the atmosphere of the carnival with a H.P. Lovecraft ominous overtones feel that I wanted.

This CD is so so many things....Dark & Forboding, Menacing & Silly, Sad & Mysterious, and dare I say, Adventurous & Lighthearted (at times). Just a wide variety of musical emotion going on in this one!

You are in for a wild ride!

So....turn off the lights and let your imagination wander through the Strange Curiosities at The Lancaster & Rigby Traveling Carnival...and be afraid...very afraid...

This is my favorite Midnight Syndicate release of the last eight years, a real sinister circus experience. There are boisterous ballyhoos and the gleeful laughing of clowns between dissonant songs of circus themes. Brilliantly presented.

Midnight Syndicate has done it again with their latest release "Carnival Arcane," by creating the mystery and excitement of visiting the turn-of-the-20th-century Lancaster-Rigby Carnival traveling circus. I say this with each new album, but truly Midnight Syndicate have created their best work ever with this haunting score.

The music of "Carnival Arcane" produces a most authentic atmosphere where you feel the chill of the autumn air and quite an uneasy feeling as you explore all the marvels in and around this eerie midway!

Another tour-de-force from Midnight Syndicate!!!

14 years ago I found their first 2 albums at Spencer's gift. The covers said to me, this is NOT cheesy Halloween music, this is more. I own all the albums and their recent movie. Making an album about the freaks of the circus, is not making fun..... It still exist and it's part of history, in entertainment. This here will put your mind into those days. What people saw, amazed, and shocked them. Put your mind deep into any MS album and see what you can hear,in your mind.

Only three of the 20+ tracks are circus or Carnival like. The rest feel more like those from a super hero movie when the villain walks into the room or something to that effect. I was really hoping for more carnival like music.

Are you somebody who likes to escape the pressures of everyday life by going to carnivals, circuses, and amusement parks? The rides, the cotton candy, the clowns, the big top, the sideshow, the funhouse, the elephants, the tigers, the lions, the fire breathers, the trapeze artists, the acrobats, the knife throwers, the sword swallowers, the art show, etc. will certainly allow you to escape, are very inviting, and will draw you in. People are attracted to the sights, sounds, and even smell of such places, much like people are attracted to the sights, sounds, and smell of baseball stadiums (Hot Dogs! Hot Dogs!). Carnivals, circuses, clowns, and amusement parks are fun and innocent, aren't they? Yes, they are. But at the same time, they can be unpredictable, even scary. Clowns are fun and innocent characters, no doubt about that. The greasepaint, the wig, the jumpsuit, the smile, and the gags can bring great joy to many people. Yet, at the same time, clowns can be scary and unpredictable to many people. A lot of people are terrified of clowns, no matter if they fall into the "happy clown" category or the "evil clown" category. We can thank Pennywise alone for that! There's something about that white greasepaint as well that terrifies many people. A "happy" clown's face, overall appearance, and the way it acts can seem so fun and innocent, but can the clown be trusted? In contrast, most people know an "evil" clown when they see one, as this type of clown acts evil and has a face that looks evil to start with. At an amusement park, if you go on a certain roller coaster for the first time, especially a huge one, every hill and turn is unpredictable because you really don't know what lies ahead or what to expect, even more so at night.Read more ›
