We got a few of these and tested them out, and now have enough to cover all our south and east windows on both floors of the house. They really make a difference! But they also make the rooms dark..can't be helped. Most of our curtains are traverse rods. My wife has purchased a bunch of thin wood (1/4 inch wide trim strips) which she slides the solar curtains on, then lets them rest on the ends of the traverse rods, so they hang between the fabric curtain and the window. This also works on the windows where we have rod/pocket curtains.
The only problem is if you want to open the window, and pull the solar curtain to the side. They do not slide well, mostly because the material they are made of does not gather well. We usually end up pulling them to the side, and tucking them behind something, or folding them up to the top of the curtain rod. Then they get all wrinkled, and are probably not quite as effective. But even so, with no air conditioning and sun on the windows all the time....we will gladly cope with the difficulties of darkness and wrinkled, hard to move solar curtains.
And in the winter, when we love our sunny windows, we roll the solar curtains on their sticks, and drop them on the floor under the windows, and they are ready to go when we need them next year!
If you have sun on a window, and don't want heavy thermo curtains...buy these!!
I took off one star because whatever it is that makes them silvery and reflective is already coming off in tiny specks and smears all over the curtains. I think it happens when I slide them to the sides - I really want them to disappear behind my real curtains when not in use so I really push them back on the rod. Seems like they need to be handled very gently to avoid ruining the functional surface over time.
Meanwhile, they still work - and I expect the will continue to work unless a whole lot more of the surface comes off.
In my opinion - they are WELL worth the money.
This summer promises to be the first comfortable one I've had in my apartment.
