Easily one of these statues could have been in honor of Caroline Quiner Ingalls, otherwise celebrated as Ma in the Little House on the Prairie television series of the 1970s. Based on her daughter Laura’s memoirs in a series of popular children’s books, the TV series ran for eight seasons before going off the air.
Caroline: Little House, Revisited, was written by Sarah Miller, a Michigan resident who began writing her first novel at ten years of age. I consider this book to be first rate. As a companion to the Little House series, it fills in the gaps of the pioneer life experiences of pioneer women in what appears to be an authentic depiction.
The author goes into great detail on many aspects of what it must have been like for a pioneer family to travel in a covered wagon, with two young children and a third on the way. Food and water are essential to life. They need to be carefully planned and carried on the wagon, including flour, corn meal, salt pork, maple syrup, and other foodstuffs. All are described in detail in this volume.
Even such necessities as preparing a latrine at a stop along the trail, and preparing for sleeping without any of the amenities that we take for granted today, are described vividly (and tastefully) in this book. I am certain that the pioneers could not have smelled very good, because they could not bathe, wash their hair, launder their clothes, or use soap to a significant extent because they lacked a permanent dwelling along the way. And, giving birth to a child on the prairie without nearby neighbors and medical help is described beautifully by the athor.
Sarah Miller wove into the story an account of how Mr. Edwards helped save Christmas for the Ingalls family. It was difficult not to picture Victor French as I read this account, because he did such a good job of portraying the Ingalls’ neighbor in the television series.
Now for this new volume about what went in the mind and heart of Caroline, or "Ma", during the period of time that "Little House on The Prairie" covers. The book leaves the story alone, without changing anything from Laura's story, but only complementing it with might have gone through Ma's mind--in Laura's books we do not get much about her, just a few words. She was a capable woman and a wonderful, loving mother, not to mention a courageous and strong person. She yearns for stability which is understandable. I cannot say I agree with the author completely about what was in Ma's mind, but I respect her imagination and portrayal of Caroline. Little sister Carrie is born in this volume, to correspond with historical facts and not with Laura's understandable fiction, and the birth scene is believable and beautiful. A great read for women who loved the books as children.
