The creator, Reimena Yee, has displayed incredible dedication to portraying the Islamic culture that is so integral to the characters and their story, and has celebrated the beautiful craft and tradition of carpet weaving in every element of her artwork- right down to the page layouts. It is awe inspiring how effectively she has captured the life of this culture through her art.
As for the story, on the surface it is about a couple who progress through life when somewhere along the way the husband is turned into a vampire, but I leave this story with a sense that I've experienced a very deep spiritual journey about self-acceptance, fate, and the boundaries of love.
My only quibble with the book is that the darkest scenes aren't easy to make out due to the choice of paper, the line work gets lost in the block colouring, which is a shame since the two usually work in perfect synchronicity.
I feel like I can actually recommend this book to everybody; the pace and content make this really accessible to 'non-comic readers', and for those who do enjoy their comics/graphic novels it is a fine example of one and would be a great addition to your collection.
If there is one nitpick, it's that some of the very dark panels are so dark, you can barely see what's inside them, but those are few and far between. In all, a beautiful and heartfelt tale!
