It's an interesting tale that's even more appropriate in this day and age, given the rise in school teasing thanks to the internet and cyber-bullying. It's also interestingly written, with a good portion of the story told in epistolary fashion -- in other words, a lot of the story is told through newspaper clippings, interviews, letters, etc. All of this felt a little unusual for a Stephen King novel, and I've read that he didn't really think too much of it after it was written. But again, it was his first novel, and a pretty great one at that.
If you're a Stephen King fan, it's a must read. If you're looking to get into King, but don't want to dive head first into one of his magnificent epics, this is also a great place to start.
Some of the science/establishment reaction feels a bit dated, but overall the novel still feels quite contemporary.
The interspersion of clippings from newspaper articles and books was an interesting way to give exposition. It also allowed a good deal of foreshadowing, which King is very skilled at.
Overall, Carrie was an entertaining read and a good preview of King's style which he continued to hone over his prolific career.
