On October 19, 2016, Michelle Schmidt's plane landed in Oregon, where she was meeting her daughter, Annie, for a camping trip. But Annie didn't show up at the airport to pick up her mother as planned.

Thus began a season of searching and coming up short, of miracles and frustrations, of love poured out and faith tested, until Annie's body was finally discovered more than three weeks later in the Columbia River Gorge, where she had fallen while hiking.

As Annie's mother opens her heart to tell her story, her husband’s story (Jon Schmidt of The Piano Guys), and Annie’s story, she writes: “It is my hope that my journey of being tutored by God to trust Him more—not only through the loss of Annie but through some of my most vulnerable and personal past experiences—will be the means of bringing strength and hope to anyone suffering at this time.”

Michelle Schmidt is a stay-at-home mother of five children, including Annie, who was lost in a tragic hiking accident. Michelle is married to Jon Schmidt, a member of The Piano Guys.

Angie Taylor is an aunt of Annie Schmidt, sister to Michelle Schmidt, a wife, and a mother of four children. She is the author of Twists in Time, a young adult science-fiction novel, as well as poetry published in several literary magazines.

What a touching book! Initially you think this book is all about the last days of Annie’s life and her death, but this book takes you on a journey of all the tender mercies and inter workings of a mother’s life to be given the strength to go through such an awful trial. I am a better person because of this book. I felt God’s love very strong while reading and this mother’s tender story will stay with me. Thank you to Michelle Schmidt for having the courage to share the most tender moments of your life and to share Annie’s light.

Yet the amazing truth is that by learning reliance on the Savior in those little things, this truly hard thing didn’t have the power to destroy their faith or hope in Jesus Christ. So, as the famous poem says, “It was then that I carried you.”

I've driven the freeway along the Columbia River Gorge many times, and this is where Annie Schmidt, (daughter of John Schmidt of The Piano Guys) died two years ago. This is not a foreboding account of the tragic death of an exceptional young woman, but it is a very spiritual, faith-promoting, even sacred account of those three weeks searching for Annie's body. Thank you to Annie's mother for sharing this powerful account.

I’ve never lost a child but through this story I could so identify with the fears and sorrow Michelle experienced in her loss of her daughter. I can only imagaine how helpful this book would be for a parent who has also experienced the loss of a child. The story flows well and keeps you wanting to read until you finish (in 2 days in my case!).
