Here's what I love about it:
Sturdy construction - All the components of the filter are made from sturdy plastic. Much stiffer and stronger than the plastic casing of the Fluval 405. Also, the casing is translucent so you can see through it to give you an indication of what's going on inside which is an added bonus! Lastly, the joint between the motor unit and the canister is held by 4 latches of better design the similar 2 latches on the Fluval.
Ergonomic design - The motor unit has a convenient fold-up handle that allows for ease of pick-up and locating the filter. The filter baskets each have a handle to allow ease of removal of the filter baskets. The primer button is also easy to use.
Exceptional value - The filter has 5 filter baskets that are a very large size allowing for tremendous options to setup your desired mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration. It also comes with BOTH a spray-bar and spout outlet setup allowing to you to choose the setup of your choice.
Easy setup - The instructions are extremely clear and the setup is very easy. The hose attachments at the filter, shutoff valves, and at the over-the-rim hardware are all fabulous. No leaks and very sturdy installation that gave me much more confidence than I had in my Fluval setups.
Quiet Operation - Lastly, its important to note that this filter is effectively silent. I haven't heard a peep from it after it cycled all the last bits of air out of the filter media
I love the filter and strongly recommend it. See my comparison pictures of a few key comparisons to the Fluval 405 filter baskets.
I acquired a 125 gallon aquarium and after reading the reviews (See? I rely on you but don't contribute), felt somewhat hesitant but ordered it. Now, nearly a month of operation, I can report that I am extremely pleased with the purchase of this product.
It is very, very easy to operate and I have found that while I don't have 'over night' clarity, when I get the filter moving, in a few days it is very impressive, with surprising clearness and no fish odor.
There are five trays, and I have experimented slightly (everyone will have an opinion here, but I tend to go with what works) but there is Eheim filter media and substrate on two trays, white floss, darker floss and Purigen in the other three. This order is really doing the trick. The filter is silent, and I mean QUIET. Birds outside make a bigger racket. Not a single leak anywhere. Very easy to change out with the two large inlet/outlet combos. And I have the long black bar set up for the outflow, just under the surface, and blends into the background with only a light movement against the plants and fish.
It is true that it is somewhat plasticky (that is a word now) and by looking through the clear sides, I can see some water does not flow THROUGH the trays, but some may go around it. But for the price, ease of use, the rate of flow, and size of tank, it cleans up a fully stocked tank (I have a wee too many fish) over two days and the fish appear to be floating, suspended in air, not water, it is that clear.
I am sorry for the customers that haven't had as good an experience, but mine is solid after two changes and three full weeks of running it. I most likely will buy another for another 125 gallon coming my way. Not sure how I will hide that from my wife, but I will practice some Jedi mind tricks first.
