User note: the threads for the tip baskets will get damaged with normal use if you use these without an accessory attached. The small circular cups work well in most conditions including sand, scree, broken rock surfaces.
I do a lot of mountaineering and backpacking. These poles have broken when I have used them in deep snow situations. However, this is to be expected. Once they get a foot or 2 into the snow, it's inevitable to put large bending loads on them. I don't expect a lite weight pole to withstand this type of use so I have a pair or heavier Black Diamond poles for those trips. I have NOT experienced the collapse failures other reviewer have cited.
They also seem to be nearly indestructible. I eventually put the machete back on my pack because these poles were able to serve the same purpose for most of the bush whacking we were doing. Of course, they won't cut through vines or small trees but they are just as effective as a blade at clearing a path through most types of smaller vegetation. They took quite a beating over the course of five days trekking through some very dense and stubborn terrain and although the paint is scratched to all **** the poles' structural integrity is completely undamaged.
I don't use the hand straps so I can't comment on their design or comfort but the cork grips are great! I didn't have a single blister after hiking with them for eight to ten hours a day for five days straight - even when they were wet.
Also, they work just as well without the rubber feet (at least on the kind of terrain I was hiking).
I'd say these poles are a good buy if you're doing very light hiking and not relying on them to get you through. If you're planning on doing anything of significance, you're probably better off spending a little more money for a lot more peace of mind.
I have bad knees at age 29, the result of multiple surgeries after sports injuries (torn ACL in each knee and torn meniscus in one knee). On a recent backpacking trip I found that these trekking poles helped relieve the stress on my knees by a lot when walking downhill. They helped a little bit on uphill stretches but were an enormous help on the downhill sections. They also help a lot to maintain your balance on rough, uneven terrain. There may be better trekking poles out there but for a first time user I don't think I could be happier with them.
These are very lightweight and VERY sturdy and after the first hike using the poles we would not ever hike without them.
I only have one issue with these poles. Even when I first got them, I had trouble getting the segments locked in place. The locking mechanism would spin freely inside the shaft instead of expanding and tightening itself into the shaft. Probably half of the time I get these set up, I have problems getting them locked correctly. I've also had issues with the locking mechanism coming off completely and being left inside the shaft. But, once I have them locked I have not had any trouble with the segments sliding.
That said, for the price I'd probably get another set of these for my wife if she wanted a set.
