Security guard Branden discovers a strange craft in an airport hangar he has been assigned to guard. Turns out to be a spaceship ... and Branden is off - as soon as he collects his cat! He is invited to Centralia, headquarters of an empire, ostensibly to serve as a deity which makes no sense at all. Having been more or less a drifter during his whole previous life, Branden has learned a vast number of skills, most of them useless in Toronto, his home base, but quite handy in an off-world environment. Eventually he catches onto what the aliens want from him ... and there's hell to pay!
The style works, the grammar works, the spelling works and even Branden works ... but it took me half the book to get to like him enough to care what happened.
