Canon DSLR 20D with a Canon EF 24-70mm zoom lens attached. The barrel of the zoom lens
is 5 inches long and 3-1/4 inch in Diameter, without the hood. The hood adds another 1/2 inch to
either side of the lens for a total of a 6 inch Diameter. Total Length of the camera with lens hood
installed, backward for storage, is 7-3/4 inches.
The plastic lens hood (Canon EW-83F) for the zoom lens, when attached to the lens backward for
storage, will fit, but it is a bit of a struggle to get it in and out of the case's 'hammock' suspension
system. The edges of the lens hood catch the opening and you have to move the camera around
and slowly slide it out. It is not a simple in-and-out motion. Taking the camera out with its normal
lens is a snap.
The Canon, with its "normal" lens, the 18-55mm zoom, will easily fit as well. That lens is 2-5/8 inch
in Diameter. I have a collapsible rubber lens hood on the normal lens and it extricates without any
problem. With either lens attached the camera strap was able to easily lie on top of the body and
I was able to zipper the lid.
There are 3 pockets, 1 on the front and 1 on each side of the case. The front pocket, 5 inches High
by 4 inches Wide, has a mesh net where you can store some items separately. I was thinking extra
photo cards in their plastic cases would fit in there nicely.
The side pockets are about 5 inches High and 3 inches Wide. I like to carry a bulb brush, extra lens
tissues and lens cleaner as well as a couple of lens attachments in their plastic containers. All the
pockets are about 1/2 inch in Depth. I also like to carry an extra battery just in case and that will fit
as well. You are not going to be cramming a lot of stuff into those pockets. That's about all I could
get in the pockets.
The case has a solid plastic bottom that cups the case 1-1/2 inches up the sides. This will helps the
case stand up on its own as well as protect the camera and lens if it were dropped. The 'hammock'
suspension system also would help with any bumps and hits to the case as well. The suspension
system can be unhooked if you do not want to use it. It also has a wider 1-1/2 inch strip of Velcro
attached to the inside of the case in case you need to lower or raise the 'system' to accommodate
your camera and lens. This gives you about 1 inch more of adjustment up or down. It could be
helpful in a pinch.
The case strap is 1 inch Wide and has a 2 inch by 9 inches strap pad attached. The pad is about
1/2 inch thick. The total length of the strap is 4 feet 4 inches when fully extended. I am 6-foot tall
and 195 pounds. If I sling the case over my shoulder the case sits at my side about center on my
waist. I still have approximately 8 more inches of extension left.
I gave this case 4 stars for its ability to house a medium zoom length lens safely, its rugged build,
and just enough storage for an on-the-fly shoot. One star off because there was no thought to a
lens hood being attached. Still all in all a very good case which looks like it will last a long time. I've
had it for over a year and have had no problems, other than the initial long lens hood issue.
The quality of build is outstanding and obviously weather proof. However, the shoulder strap is a piece of junk: very tiny with a barely padded shoulder pad. Then again Lowepro bags suffer from the same disease. To fix this issue I've ordered Comfort Air Cell Padded Netbook Notebook Briefcase Bag Shoulder Strap from Amazon. Once it arrives, I'll update this review. The Strap is the reason why I rate this bag 4 stars. Why manufacturers design brilliant bags and than ignore one of the most important components like the shoulder strap is beyond me. Nikon D7000 with lens attached is a heavy camera and while you carry it in the bag with the slim and poorly padded shoulder strap, it can cause quite a bit of discomfort and photography is all about joy and pleasure, not pain and suffering (Ha!Ha!)
Anyway, I am still extremely satisfied with Case Logic SLR 201 and happily recommend it to anyone who needs a toploader bag for a medium to bigger camera, with excellent padding, weather protection and supreme quality of build.
Pros:
- High quality build
- Great price
- Weatherproof
- Excellent padding
- Plenty of pockets
- Size big enough for larger SLR with lens attached
- Hammock suspension system
Cons:
- Strap rather useless
- Pockets could be bigger
Update 3/12/2011
As promised I am updating this review after I've received Comfort Air Cell Padded Netbook Notebook Briefcase Bag Shoulder Strap. This strap makes all other straps supplied with the bags rather ridiculous. It virtually transforms your bag carrying experience. It's a lot wider then strap supplied with the bag , making it a lot more comfortable around your neck, chest and back. Shoulder pad is brilliant: wide, long and sawn in place [eliminating any chance of sliding around] and padded with small bubbly compartments filled with air, making it extremely comfortable on your shoulder. Pad is also made of stretchy material, making it to fill elastic and that way helping in carrying heavy load [in my case camera] with ease.
This strap makes Case Logic SLR-201 case ULTIMATE CAMERA CASE!
update: 20/jan/2013
Zip stitching started to tear on one of the corners, still not alarming enough to claim against 25 year warranty.
