I admit I didn't expect much from this book. There were only 5 reviews, mostly 5 snd 4 stars, raving that the book was so good the readers couldn't put it down. Sounded like a friends and family fan club. Well, guess what? I LOVED this book! Great story, wonderful characters, fabulous dialogue, amazingly well-written, unique storyline, great suspense. I lost sleep on this book because I really could not put it down. Ms. Dorris has a winner here in this down-to-earth 20-something girl protagonist, Casey, who is just trying to get some independence from her clinging mom after her formidable father, the Colonel, dies. Set on making her life her own, Casey moves into a tiny apartment with Pumpkin, her cat (who will steal your heart), and finds a job at the local bank in the "home retention" department. Sounds deadly dull, right? Wrong!! Casey makes an unsettling discovery while looking through her late fathers' desk, forcing her to question everything she has believed about her life. She also unwittingly sets into action a series of work-related events that have her fearing for her life. Seeking answers, Casey sets off on a mission of discovery that tears her world apart. The book unfolds slowly and gracefully in the early pages, and ramps up the action and suspense soon after. Every single character in this book is brilliantly conceived and richly developed. I loved that there is almost a sense of familiarity with the characters as you get to know them, as they are so realistically fleshed out and the dialogue so fresh and authentic. What would have improved the book for me: A good proofreader is needed to clean up a few distracting word syntax errors in most chapters.Read more ›

The writing was easy to follow. The references to Sacramento were wonderful as I could picture exactly where the book was talking about. It kept me captured as I continued to read the story and watch it unfold.

I was a bit surprised that it was so easy for Casey to find her birth mom so quickly and without much investigating. I've heard it takes so much more to find birth parents especially since it was a cover-up for something as mysterious as the military brainwashing.

I like adding the spiritual side of Thomas and the academic side of Andrew. Carlton is a good character; I've worked with nerds like him and they are easy to be friends with because you don't have to worry about them hitting on you.

I'm a proofreader by nature and am quite impressed that there were just a few items and would be happy to send them. 99.8% proper. I had another friend post a book on Amazon and it was as if it hadn't been proofread there were so many errors.

Some more development of Andrew and Casey's relationship as we all love a good romance and this is just waiting to be revealed. It was a page turner and I love books like that when you just can't put it down. It was hard to tear myself away from it but I had other things to do.

One would wonder if how much of that type of bank corruption is happening today and we, as the trusting consumer, wouldn't believe it. We trust those big mega banks. Hah! That's for another venue.

I'd recommend this to my friends especially in Sacramento. They know where all the places are.

I can't wait for Casey's Karma.

While I liked the book well enough, I really hate when author stops right in the middle of a story and the book ends. The whole thing is just a hook to get you to buy the next book. To me you should be warned that it's really not a complete book. Even if it's a bargain book or a freebie, you have just wasted your time reading something you either have to pay more to finish or never know the ending to. I feel cheated.

Another pet peeve that I wish Amazon would do something to address is when you buy something thinking it's a book and it's really a novella or short story. There should be guidelines where that's spelled out clearly right up front where you see the book's title and price.

I don't usually read these types of books because I find them uninteresting. However I got to Chapter 5 and could not put the book down. Finished reading the book in 3 days. I probably would have finished it sooner but I have limited reading time. The book plot twisted and turned and ended in an unexpected way. I'd recommend this book to anyone. In fact, I've already passed this on to my mom and she loves it so far!
Casey's relationship with her mom is relate-able. Even the best of mother daughter relationships, daughter's will naturally love their mothers and yet still have a unresolved issue with them. On the other hand daughters always seem to have an admiration for their fathers and Casey seems to wish that she had more time to spend with her dad before he died.
Early in the story Casey learns a secret that takes her down a path the reader would not have imagined. In Casey's quest to find herself she has some bazaar experiences. Some of which I am not sure are quite believable to some. Nonetheless, I got caught up enough in Casey that I wanted to know what was going to happen next. The story twists and turns keeps a reader on their toes.
