Let's get the obvious out of the way first:

This book is certainly a page turner. The adventures of the Protagonist, Sammy, and his companions - you wouldn't want to call them friends or partners; their feelings towards one another range from mild mistrust to deep loathing - will blow your mind. Women of passion, men of principle - and, yes, loyalty, betrayal, the wild chase, the inevitable clash, the unforeseen twist (many of those): it's all there.

The Protagonist is a charmer who is intricate in his simplicity. At times he comes off as someone who doesn't have trust issues because he a) has a sunny personality b) is not sufficiently evolved, for lack of a better word, to have any use for trust. He's guided by spiritual urges rather than intellectual decisions.

That said, what really won me over was the Villain.

He (and I'm using the word "he" loosely) is most certainly not charming or humorous (at least not intentionally), and pretty frightening (you wouldn't want to run into him in the street, uh, ever), but that, in fact, is beside the point. Bear with me.

The Villain is, well, unique. One of a kind.
That's an understatement, actually.

Man's opinion of Man can only be subjective: we gauge virtue and vice based on the one value system we know. God, who is, among other things, the Creator of said system, uses it to point out our shortcomings to us, and also to reward merit. We are His children, and as such, we get a lot of leeway from Him.

The Villain in The Book o' The Worm is Man's intellectual equal. He is not human; there are no others like him; he has no home team, no aspirations we could possibly appreciate (or indeed fully grasp), and no vested interests in any of our affairs.

The book kept my attention throughout. I was really feeling sorry for the worm at first, but then all that changed as I kept reading. Also the relationship between Sammy and Luther kept me wondering what could possibly happen next given the situation were they were forced to collaborate to bring down a common enemy.

Mr. Monticone has a unique writing style. Just when the reader thinks he has the characters figured out, he'll cleverly throw in a curve ball. He doesn't spare the reader the raw details, yet his stories aren't defined by gore. His stories keep the reader turning pages in anticipation, and are always thought provoking.
