Buddy Buppsen dreamed of working in television ever since he was a kid glued to the game shows on his foster parents’ TV, but now, with a college degree of questionable value in hand, Buddy discovers that a dream job is still just that—a job. Part absurdist satire of the entertainment industry, part slacker’s response to Atlas Shrugged, this debut comic novel by Andy Spain (McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, Weekly Humorist, Points in Case) explores the nature of selling out, common decency, and dystopian workplace woes.
Praise for CASH GRAB
If you’re a show biz insider, this book will make you laugh and cringe in equal measure. If you’re a show biz outsider, it’ll make you happy to stay that way. Cash Grab is dark, funny, and will definitely piss some people off!

There is an accessibility, an air of familiarity to the characters’ rapport that transported me to my college days when I was sitting with friends sharing laughs over a beer. Mostly laughs, sometimes spit takes, occasionally a collective sigh over relatable frustrations or disappointment.
The author is a gifted wordsmith and he has interspersed more puns and wordplay than I’ve perhaps ever seen crafted in a single text. And this, to be clear, is a sheer delight to me. (Aside: At one point, I wanted to trend #MomsMakingDadJokes on Twitter. Except, I’m not a Twitter personality, so there’s that. Instead, I just throw up my hands, overlapping my fingers to form the hashtag symbol and gleefully blurt – out loud– the complete phrase “hashtag-moms-making-dad-jokes!” to anyone within earshot, thoroughly embarrassing my 10 year old for my own amusement. It’s 100% fun and 0% Musk.)
As the cover alludes, if you’re looking for an epic journey where good triumphs over evil, or seeking professional inspiration that the American dream is alive and well, this ain’t it.
This book will resonate with any generation that was told “You can be anything you want to be! Follow your dreams!” internalized that as truth, invested their lives accordingly, and then endured the dynamics of the actual workforce. The narrative contrasts the promise that capitalism rewards productivity and ingenuity with a variety of harsh realities for today’s creative class. Does hard work pay off? The main character just wants to eek out a living in the media production industry. The authenticity of his struggle is tempered with humor throughout.
Go ahead and order this entertaining book. You'll enjoy it. It’s hilarious and witty. Although, you shouldn’t take my word for it – I go around shouting hashtags in public. Instead, you should take Vulture magazine’s recommendation: The arts & culture publication named “Cash Grab” by Andy Spain as a best comedy book of 2022 alongside titles by comedic writer geniuses Judd Apatow, Molly Shannon, and Bob Odenkirk.
And if you don't like it, you can shout some hashtags at me.
