Of course the only irritating thing about the movie is watching Natalie Wood walk in those tight skirts. Very uncomfortable, but I try to overlook it. This is definitely a feel good movie that I will watch again and again.

OK so this is a fluff piece and a jab at corporate mergers and acquisitions but James Garner fresh off his Maverick days plays a great corporate raider. But of course a love interest with a young Natalie Wood a year before her famous West Side Story adds a twist to Cash's scheme. A good entertaining old time film that you can watch with mixed company.

I had always enjoyed the movie so when I had the chance to pick this book up I grabbed it. I wasn't disapointed, one of my surpises was that the movie was fairly faithful to the book but, this quick read fleshes out the story of an ethical businessman tryng to do the right thing in a less then ethical world.

Cute movie and fun but in a "dated" sort of way. For instance, the mother pushing the daughter to find a husband and settle down instead of continuing her career because a woman's place is at the side of a man as his wife; the millionaire buying up failing companies and flipping them to sell on --- this would take a multimillionaire in this day and age. But, as always, Natalie Wood and James Garner melt your hearts and entertain you. And, one last note, James Garner said that he always felt as if he was a "dirty old man" lusting after Natalie Wood because she was so much younger than him.

This movie is a lot of fun, James Garner is great as usual and Natalie Wood is not only good but she sure looks great. The plot revolves around rich guy Cash McCall (Garner), who buys companies not doing so well and gets them back on their feet and then sells them for a profit. He gets involved buying a plastics company strictly because he wants a chance to see Lory Austen (Natalie Wood) again, the daughter of the owner, who he met during the summer. They were attracted to each other, but when it got serious later that night, he opted to send her home before something serious happened. It hurt her badly and Cash now wants to make amends because he realizes just how much he cares for her, and has actually fallen for her completely. The next thing you know he getting accused of cheating her father out of his company and everything starts to unravel. All very lighthearted which makes for a cute comedy and a lot of fun to watch. Good acting from all involved.

The film deals with the activities of an business entrepreneur who every body knows of, but few really know well or even where he is most of the time! This is Cash McCall (James Garner). He buys up businesses, revamps them and then sells them again - at a profit. In retrospect he meets a girl (Natalie Wood) at a party, likes her greatly but does not want to get too involved. So he drops her! Her father wants to sell his plastics molding business and who better - for a quick deal - to sell to than Cash McCall! This is where the film begins to get interestingly 'complicated' because, after the deal is done, the father is told by a 'friend' he could have got even more for his company than Cash McCall paid. Now the fight is on and the lawyers move in. Can Cash McCall and his associates survive? Does he get the girl? Well you will have to watch this interesting film to find out! If you like a good fun story, you'll like this!

I love them both and most of the cast, but that's just me. The protective father wants to protect his little girl from a wild and crazy guy that may, on first impression, appear to be a irresponsible, debonair, flamboyant Playboy; turns the table in the end in a unique but very SERIOUS way well played by the great Garner. Beautiful energetic Ms Wood is a good mismatch match who in the end gets more that she expected.
So does daddy in more ways than one?
Why can't the good actors stay young until after they are 100?
6/26/18 So you send me amessage the price dropped SIGNIFICANTLY but: it did not? WTH IS WRONG? ARE THEY LYING TO YOU? OR ARE YOU LYING TO ME? NO ANSWER YET?

James Garner is very good in this role. Natalie Wood a good runner-up. the movie is dated but enjoyable. the plot is tame compared to todays Wall Street movers and shakers. But even though it is dated, greed and many other vices are still there. Just enjoy.

Halcyon Days
Reviewed in Canada on August 20, 2022
James Garner left a hit TV Series, Maverick, to pursue a career on the big screen. As it turned out, with some notable exceptions, such as The Americanization Of Emily, roles that would have elevated Garner to Hollywood's A List never materilaized. Instead, he made a series of largely forgettable B pictures that, ultimately, led him back to TV to play a down at his heels PI named Jim Rockford.
Cash McCall is one of the film projects that enticed him away from the role of Bret Maverick. In it, Garner plays, you guessed it, a character named Cash McCall. McCall is a man ahead of the curve. He's a corporate raider before that term was invented. He buys companies, allegedly on the cheap, strips out their constituent parts & sells those parts for what winds up being a handsome payday.
One of the many things that makes this film a delight is the opprobrium with which McCall is viewed, both in the media & the American business community at large. In later decades, fictional characters like Gordon Gecco & real life Wall St. pirates, pick any decade, would be applauded & feted for doing precisely what McCall is accused of. My, how the worm has turned & the leopard has revealed its spots.
This film has an added dimension in that it portrays a slice of Americana, circa 1960. Ike is still in the White House & America is still ascendant, domestically as well as internationally. The economy just keeps growing, raising all the boats in the harbour. Good union jobs, with commensurate benefits, predominate & anything made in Japan is synonymous with junk.
This is America at the zenith of the American Century. Presidential malfeasance, whether sexual or otherwise, is, by a gentleman's agreement, never discussed, much less revealed. Viet Nam, Watts burning, Watergate, Iran Contra & the One Percent in flagrant delecto, are all to come. It was a great time to be a WASP, especially a male WASP (see Mad Men). The rot was already there, but only a "can do" innocence & naiveté were on display. Halcyon Days that will never come again!
On a brighter note, did I mention that also on display here is Natalie Wood as McCall's love interest. Wood was not only an underrated actress, so was also ravishingly beautiful. And the chemistry between Gardner & Wood makes you believe that they're smitten with each other.
As for the rest of the cast, led by Dean Jagger as Wood's father, they each turn in a performance that adds to the whole. The DVD of this film is of great quality, so you don't need to worry that you might be getting a shoddy disc that, in a good frame, allows you to tell Gardner & Wood apart!
You can enjoy this movie as a superior romcom, a slice of Americana, showcase for Natalie Wood's beauty & talent, what might have been with James Garner, or any of the preceding. However you decide to view it , I think, like me, you'll view it more than once & the popcorn will taste just as fresh each time.
