An alternative to this watch is of course the other MTD models - though this is the one - the best style and design. I have the MTD 1080, not bad, just not as cool looking, but there is some detail that is lacking on the 1079 that the 1080 has....such as actual applied indices (hour markers) as opposed to being painted onto the watch face on the 1079. We are dealing with $50 range...so they all work out in the end. If you want to spend just a little less and get a ton of watch, the Casio MDV-106 is the watch to get - no lighting feature, the lume at night is more than decent when charged up with a flashlight before bed, and its 200m water resist - making it usable for light recreational diving from all reports I have read. The MDV-106 is always under $50 on Amazon, closer to $40 typically. Zero risk in buying the MDV-106, it is already a Casio Cult Classic.
The Illuminator is a cool feature - not quite as good as Timex Indiglo - but its a good feature to have. Both day and date are represented, making it convenient. The bezel rotates in one direction, 120 clicks, like most divers. The crystal is slightly curved, a mini bonus - the other Casios in this price range have flat crystals from my experience, and I have a few.
Why you need the Casio-1079 - its a great travel watch and every day watch. Day/Date, LED Illuminator, 100m water, turning bezel ( keep track of time and second time zone with it if used in that manner), stainless steel ruggedness, and budget price (no harm if it gets broken or stolen really - say vs an Omega or Rolex). The watch can be used casually or dressed up - the style is classic and fits in anywhere - think Rolex Submariner style.
I have owned a few luxury price level watches - they are nice and all - but you have to service them at huge costs, you dont want to lose or damage them, and automatic watches just dont keep time reliably in all circumstances - I have broken every mechanical automatic watch I have ever owned - requiring $500+ servicing each time. I personally am done with that world - its just not a great use of funds. Watches like the Casio MTD-1079 hit all the check boxes - looks, time keeping, durability, utility, bang per buck value.....its just a no brainer. I see so many men who dont wear watches - its just looks incomplete. I can't stand watch-less people, yeah yeah, you get your time from your slave device smart phone. Join the human race, wear a decent looking watch. Men, anyone, you need to wear a watch as an adult! Casio, other brands like Timex, there are many options, but a watch like this is great for a collector or used as a daily wearer in a single watch collection.....just get it - you wont regret it. Get into the watch game if you aren't already! Damn! Bugs me....non watch wearing weirdos.
This watch coupled with a Timex Weekender Chrono white faced version would make a great 2 watch collection for under $100 for both watches. Great looks and versatility with both - add a few Nato straps into the mix and you have almost any situation covered with a watch. Interview, dating, travel, dinner, weekend trip.
Summary of alternatives:
Casio MTP-4500D - Chrono - I dont have one - but it looks like a good value Casio Chrono ($44)
Timex Weekender Chrono 40mm (chrono features, dressier look, Indiglo, under $50 typically) - I suggest the white faced version, makes best use of the Indiglo light.
Watch still 100% functional - keeps good time, loses less than 1 minute per month on average, better than most any mechanical watch and without having to wind it. I have gotten the watch wet several times, no leaking, havent gone to depth, just average use. The battery that it was shipped with is still in the watch, though when I didnt wear the watch for extended periods, I pull the crown to save some juice....I have used the illuminator lighting on the watch many times....so this is going on 2 years same battery, not bad. Casio doesnt always keep all models around forever, if you are looking at this watch, get it, as its still in the $50-60 range alot of times on Amazon here. I have worn it with Silicon quick release straps - works well, and very convenient to install - Barton makes nice two tone versions of these now....Nato straps always work well, but are so over used now...its almost lame to use them....a nylon/ cloth or even leather strap with a closed metal clasp would be cool....again, the shipped metal band is decent for this price range, just remove links if needed, easy to do yourself with a small tool. To reiterate from my earlier review - if you want just as much quality and dont mind giving up the led illumination - the Casio MDV 106 is the way to go for $40 range, I have that watch as well....its flawless for the price range - I think the best watch you can get in the diver class for under $50, its well documented by many for being as such, and it is just as flexible if not more so for the array of straps you can use....have a Silicon quick release on the MDV 106 right now, pretty much a perfect "one watch" for any man who wants a water resistant to 200m watch (MDV 106).
- Solid SS Bracelet
- Casio Reliability
- The battery illumination is great.
- Day and Date Complication
- Low Clutter on the Dial
- The bezel action/detents are strong and certain.
- Decent Fluorescent Paint
- Conservative style allows for business wear
- This is not really a Dive Watch. It likely wouldn't survive too many salt water adventures
- The Solid steel bracelet makes this a fairly heavy watch for it's size: 5.5oz w/2 links removed for a 7" wrist
- The hands are not solid, so the effort required in order to determine the time is a bit bothersome, as only the tips of the hands are white.
- Generic/Conservative Style (both a a Pro, and a Con! It doesnt have much flair to it, so if you really want a watch that stands out, this is not it!)
- Spend far less on a plastic cased/strapped Casio with better readability and far less weight, if you dont need the illumination and style: MRW200H-1BV
- Buy the Classic Casio Steel Digital watch for much less... Retro Props from all that know the brand history: A168WA-1
- Spend a little less and get better readability, if you are willing to lose the day complication and go with a rubber strap: MDV106-1A
- Look into the Seiko 5 line of automatic watches if you want real style and can live without battery illumination and powered-winding convenience, if you can can afford them... they are a true "man's man" watch and well respected among the watch hobbyists, There are many versions from $50 to $200...closest to this model's style: SNZF15
Three months later and I am happier with this watch than I expected. I will likely buy more CASIO watches.

PREVIOUS REVIEW 3 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE:
3 months in ware evrey day, (have barley taken It off since I got it) .Initially was heavy, then I got used to it. Awesome legibility in the dark LED illumination is almost blinding at night. Some minor scratches on the crystal but all in all very good The band come highly polished but won't stay like that for long, (they build charterer over time, actually looks better all scratched up then polished). Keeps time well. If you are a night owl like me you might find the fact that it takes several hours to change dates annoying, but I'm sure it wont effect most people. Day+Date transitions over 5hrs: 11pm- 4am
Love the watch and looks more expensive then it is. Also the light feature sets this watch apart from other diver style watches
The downside is that the hour & minute hands have a little triangle of glowing white paint at the tip, and the rest of the hands are pretty much invisible. That's fine at night - but in the daylight, the little triangles are lost among the little white dots and triangles around the circumference of the face.
You have to tilt the watch back & forth until you can get a reflection off part of the hands to be able to read the time.
It shouldn't take several seconds of fiddling & tilting just to read a watch!!
Mejor que el Marlin.
Amazon.ca, as usual, provided an excellent service.
I don't give it 5 stars just because during the day the hands are a little difficult
to see and it takes a few days to "master" that.
I also like the fact that there is no way to loose this watch, because of its weight;
you'll feel right away.
Arrived in 2 days as promised
