I want it to be louder but I had to back off due to distortion. I use iHunt app on my iPhone. For the price, I thought it is a well designed speaker.
Does it need to be louder? Hard to say as I am new to calling and dogs do have highly sensitive ears as compared to humans.
I am sticking with this for now as it is light to carry, "c" batteries are good for this application and it does sound good. What I find interesting is that once you are 100 yards away, in the rolling hills of Virginia, the source of the sound it hard to determine and it seems to be farther away that it really is. I think this would be good. It is not a function of the caller but rather the landscape but I could only know that after using an electronic caller or hearing a friend call from a second location which I have not tried.
I have manual callers and feel that they will remain my best option and using the E-caller will be an alternative to get them into the area. Watching pro callers on hunts they seem to not use the E-callers that much once they have spotted the dogs.
I would, as of today, not invest hundreds in an E-caller and like having something to use that is cheap. $5 for iHunt. It makes this purchase work.
The Item is of very good quality and lasts a long time with each set of batteries I personaly do not unwound the wire as I feel this is it's only weakness and leaving it wrapped around the device will help it hold up better over the long haul.
Predator MP3 sounds can be downloaded all over the internet for free and you can make all kind of neat custom calls for this unit to play....I usualy put a "10 minute" silence on the call first so when I turn it on it gives me enough time to set it up and walk a distance away and then after the 10 minutes is up it will go onto whatever custom call set I choose on the MP3 player and then I simply choose auto repeat so it keeps going throughout my entire hunt.
This unit get's very loud and I have found depending on the quality of the MP3 player used it makes a big difference in both loudness and sound quality.
In the end I use this product every once and awhile I do not feel a product like this should ever replace manual call's as they just in my opinion do not work as well it's a nice addition but I would not use it as a crutch for lack of calling skills.
Good luck bustin the yotes.
This thing looks a lot like a lantern when the handle is upright and it's sitting on it's rubber base. This speaker can double as an interesting conversation starter when you're not using it as a speaker.
Also note that this thing is made in China. Of course, when it comes to electronics like this, then good luck finding something that's not made in China.
Note: first one we got arrived broken, and we had to get another and send it back, but the second one works fine.
What was troubling was not just how it could fail for no reason, but the fact that after an almost 4 mile hike to my hunting spot, I had no other options because this was a brand-new unit and I never imagined it would just stop working like that. This was obviously not well put together and a perfect example of "you get what you pay for". Save your money or prepare yourself for disappointment.
