This is one of my favorite movies. It shows a person going through a huge arch of life, from happily married corporate guy, to castaway, to singled, changed, survivor with an open future. He learned so many things, foremost of which was 'you never know what the tide will bring .'
I rented this because I couldn't get any of my DVD players to work on the deluxe edition I bought at a garage sale. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is that Amazon's version is heavily edited. They cut out all of the attempted suicide scenes at the top of the cliff (and who knows what else). That's a travesty. Just show the director's cut, please?!

Tom Hanks "gives one of the towering screen performances of all time" (New York Post) as Chuck Noland, a FedEx systems engineer whose ruled-by-the-clock existence abruptly ends when a harrowing plane crash leaves him isolated on a remote island. As Chuck struggles to survive, he finds that his own personal journey has only just begun...

Tom Hanks can make any movie great. As a surviving crash member of a Fed Express flight Team he is the sole survivor. He makes it to an island but he has little to live on and he searches for any and all ways to eat, live and survive.
Tom Hanks plays this role to perfection and he literally makes you believe that he is the character in the film. His best friend is a WILSON Sports Volleyball that he becomes so attached to it is a major part of the story.
This is a good film and it is worth owning and watching. The BluRay version of the film is well engineered with good video and audio. I also got a VUDU digital HDX movie that I can stream to my Apple and Android devices and to my TV and to my digital projector onto a 12 foot diagonal screen.
I like this film and I rated it 5 stars.

Cast Away was Tom Hanks harrowing tale of survival. He was stranded on a small island in the pacific. There he had to find the basics like food, shelter and water. There were dramatic moments like when he cut his thigh on coral reef to when he finally produced fire. He also had moments where he totally broke down into tears. It’s also crazy to see Hanks later on with a huge beard and long hair. It’s like the hippy version of Hanks. He never gave up which was the theme of the story. It’s definitely one of Hanks most memorable roles especially because he had to carry almost the entire story by himself.
I have to say the last quarter of the movie is a bit of a disappointment as it really drags things out.

What do you get when you combine a compelling story about human survival with a great script, a highly talented Director who knows how to make a film, and perfect casting that includes Tom Hanks in the main role? You get a five star film that people will enjoy watching. Robert Zemeki's is a gifted film-maker, and it amazes me to think that he made two great films, Cast Away and What Lies Beneath (which is one of the best ghost stories ever made) practically on top of each other. In Cast Away, we get to see Tom Hanks at the top of his game. By the way, is there anyone out there who think Tom Hanks can't act? Anybody?!!! I loved the scene after Chuck and Kelly, played exquisitely by Helen Hunt, exchange gifts in the car and we begin to sense that he was playing a kind of prank on her by giving her small gifts and walking away towards the plane with the car keys in his hand holding back what we have to perceive is a wedding engagement ring. "That reminds me, I almost forgot, I have one more present for you ... (as he takes the small gift box from his pocket) ... although this isn't an open in the car kind of present, say like hand towels, which was a joke by the way."

The main character gives "The Love of his life" a pager, some dish towels and... oh yeah... here's your ring in a box as he rushes away from a festive Christmas party to take care of business...money... money... money....
She gives him a family heirloom gold watch with her picture in it. The watch ends up saving his life as he dashes to grab it as the plane is going down and he becomes the only survivor. The watch with her picture keeps him going for lonely years.
He made his flight crew fly out on Christmas night and they lost their lives because of it.
It takes four long years all alone for him to face himself and atone for his selfish money-driven life. He creates a little idol for himself out of a washed up volleyball. The face on it looks like a demon painted in his own blood.
It's not until he lets go of the idol he created and clinged to that his life takes a turn for the better.
An emaciated Christlike figure laying on a wooden cross-like raft in the middle of the ocean is spotted by a passing crate ship.
A new man resurrected from the old still has a future...as long as he keeps taking the next breath...

I love survival movies .. find them very inspiring - Open Water, Alive, Wild, 127 Hours, etc. This film tops them all. Happened to come across it recently on one of the movie channels. Loved it. Tom Hanks' acting is wonderful. Very profound and moving story - plane crashes, and he's alone and stranded on an island surrounded by the ocean ... he becomes introspective and has moments of enlightenment which lead him to discoveries about himself and plans for his survival. Highly recommend this movie.

The first time I watch Cast Away, I couldn't get over the long stretches of silence. It was difficult for me and I had every excuse to not pay attention so I never got into the movie. then I sat down and watched it with my wife and really enjoyed it. It is a great look into the desire to live, the hope you can find in small everyday object and how to cope with absolute loss and not lose your mind (Wilson). Hanks does a great job...the transformation physically was scary and in the end it seemed like he had been through something...maybe difficult filming locations. The relationship in the movie (no spoilers here) moved the story along and provided the carrot to a lost man. I enjoyed watching him creatively use his surroundings to build his new life and the end was emotional...for a quiet movie I was surprised at how much was conveyed.

一人でも生きていけるなんて悲しい幻想は棄てよう
Reviewed in Japan on January 24, 2019Verified Purchase
Cast Away

A good film

THis is the film where Tom Hanks lost shedloads of weight just for the role. When you've got that kind of commitment, the film really needs to be watched. Hanks plays a FedEx workeer whose delivery plane crashes into the sea and he's marooned on a desert island. He learns to survive and finally makes it back to civilisation. That's pretty much the whole story, minus the human interests that make this very watchable. Hanks as always, is brilliant, and there's the usual weepie stuff along the way. A good film to watch.

The Loneliness of the Character Chuck on a Deserted Island in the Middle of the Pacific.
I think I would be talking to a Volley Ball too.
Even with the Basic Training I have had would not have seen me through. Then again the Thought Helen Hunt would keep me going.
Tom Hanks deserved an Oscar for his Performance.
The Ocean Ditching of the Plane is Intense.
I Bought the Bluray to replace an 18yr old R1 DVD. The Bluray Transfer is Faultless.
DTS Master Audiio Soundtrack Kicks.

Something of a modern Robinson Crusoe as Tom Hanks character gets stranded on a small desert island after a plane crash. The crash is WOW and makes the hair on the back of my head stand on end. The story moves along nicely and has some interesting angles. Helen Hunt also stars and provides some added drama to the film at both the beginning and the end. Are some parts of the film implausible? Maybe, but then again it is a film!

Just such a feel-good film and one that is timeless and never ages. Good picture quality for me and being region free can watch using any blu ray machine. Top class delivery service as always from Amazon. Film is, for me, just great!!! Get it while the price is low. This is becoming somewhat of a rarity on home media now.
