Product Description

Take the two matching pieces apart and put them back together, that is the objective of this classic metal puzzle. A word from the designer: The early 20th century witnessed a kind of puzzle boom, which in 1905 gave birth to an absurdly simple looking puzzle known as the "Devil's Claws". We were surprised at how nicely this new version turned out after deciding to revise the original. Do not let the smooth looks of this one fool you. Those who let frustration take over often leave this puzzle forever unsolved. Dedicated to the true puzzler! The key word is "Claws".

I am surprised this is a Hanayama piuzzle. It is not a Hanayama original. This is a standard puzzle design that is produced and sold by many different companies under differnet names. Most commonly named "the Devils Horn" or something similar. I love this puzzle. It looks easy, and I solve (take it apart) usually within ten minutes of playing with it. Putting it back together is a snap, but that's the deceptive part! It slides together so easily, that you think to yourself , "Well that was easy. I got this one beat. Now to take it apart I just need to...wait this part needs to go...hmmm funny , it didn't do that last time...." and you can't get it back apart again until you fiddle with it to solve it! At least that is my experience with it. I suppose with hours and hours of practice that can change, but I haven't reached that point yet. I think this is an excellent puzzle! Perfect to pocket and pass around at a party. It is not a "You'll never solve it." puzzle. It is a "I did this before, I know how to do this...hey wait..what the?" puzzle. You'll solve it once or twice, but it will probably take you many many solves before it becomes easy and boring. This is a classic!

Someone gave my husband a couple of these puzzles. The first one we did, the Hanayama USHY33 Key Cast Metal Brain Teaser Puzzle was very easy. This one was a lot harder for how simple it looks. At least for me. It took me a week of fiddling with it occasionally to solve it, another hour after that to figure out the solve. It took my husband 2 weeks with me spending the last day working with him and showing him how to get the pieces unhooked.
It took my son 15 minutes. Nothing more humbling.
These puzzles are very well made, but not a lot of fun once you solve them. I suggest giving them to the first person who just can't stop messing with it trying to solve it. Let them get frustrated. But while your working on solving them, it's addictive, because you know they can be solved if you just figure out how.

As of this typing, I own nine Hanayama puzzles. Like almost all of the Hanayama puzzles this is built out of quality material and puts up with lots of abuse and frustration from friends and family. I believe this puzzle, the Devil, is one of the funner puzzles. The solution is actually quite simple. Most people will realize within a matter of minutes what needs to happen, but "it just won't fit that way". This is a good puzzle because even though you may have solved it once, if you set it down and come back to it later, it is difficult to remember how you did it last time. It is much easier to put back together than take apart. Sometimes I will take it apart for a friend, watch them put back together quite easily, and then laugh at their frustration as they try to tak it back apart.

My 10th grade son used this for his science experiment. Take 50 participants and show 25 how to solve the puzzle, tell (w/out showing) 25 how to solve it and see which group does better. A very sturdy puzzle even when the participants were getting frustrated and wanted to bend the pieces!

This is an excellent puzzle. It has been made by many companies and is still one of the most common puzzles around. To be blunt,it is a classic. It has a difficulty of 4 out of 10.It is made of heavy metal ,so it is almost impossible to break. It is a puzzle that most people could solve with a little perseverence. It is a puzzle that will get passed around when a few friends are socializing. It looks much simpler than it is,and since it doesn't look intimidating, once one person solves it,someone else will be anxious to try .
The thing I like about this puzzle is that even if you have solved it;put it away for a while;then later on ,get it out and it is still a challenge to resolve it.Some puzzles ,like this one,are difficult to take apart. However;this one can be put back together almost instantly.Highly recommended for anyone who likes puzzles or a challenge of any kind.

I enjoyed this puzzle, but don't really feel it is a level 4. It took me and my daughter a couple minutes each to figure it out. (We are very good at puzzles.) I do like that it is very solid and a good size. The pieces generally move freely, however the unevenness in the bends do allow it to jam occasionally. The manufacturing/design could be a little better to prevent jamming and/or the tendency to want to force things. All-in-all, I really like it and will try it on my co-workers next.
