Since the main character is a boy, and the book is about his summer adventure at sea, I wasn't sure if she would be as intrigued by the plot. I shouldn't have worried... once she started, she couldn't put the book down and finished it within three days. While it's always good to see her reading and enjoying a book, I really loved her description to me about it afterwards. My daughter said it was about a 13yr old boy who was bullied about his weight and instead of going to a fat kids camp for the summer, the main character finds a group of friends as funny and different from each other as could be, and they go on an ocean adventure with pirates, storms at sea and a spooky island. From my daughter's 8th grade perspective she says, "He learns he can be a good person and a leader no matter what his weight or size." Well, if that's not one of the best lessons we can teach our middle school children, than I don't know what is. I'd give this book more than 5 stars if I could! Hopefully there will be more adventures written by the authors with beautiful lessons weaved into the exciting plots. This should be on every middle school English teachers shelf!
I mean it is obviously written for the children and young adults market.
The book clearly describes the characters and storyline, but in a very adult way. even things like the very official looking reports on pages 29, 52/52
It is obvious somebody spent some time in the US Navy or in government service.
It also uses pretty cool technology to connect you to the characters in the book.
Like the BR Barcode scan on page 109 to automatically link your iPad,iPhone, Android, tablet or smartphone to their webpage and listen to their theme song.
All in all, the book has a great sci-fi, fantasy storyline with enough realism to have anyone of any age feel immersed in both characters and story. It even has an element of learning in it (but don't tell the kids)
What a fun read!
I have a feeling this is the beginning of many sequel books/series and possibly a TV series.
I would not like to reveal you the whole story, but I can assure that it’s a very interesting, adventures and fun. The story begins to take place in San Francisco and it focuses on main character Danny Herrera, a thirteen year old boy. His uncle wants to send him to a fat camp (he is a little too overweight) during the summer, but Danny has different, more exciting plans. He wants an adventurous summer, so he and his friends Shayla, Cody, Miko and Eugene decide to spent it their own way – they steal a boat and start their unforgettable adventure at sea. But of course as expected, everything does not go according to their plan. They meet and cope with many inconveniences and dangers lurking in the sea – from dangerous storms and rough seas to pirates. How will all these unexpected adventures ended? If you are curious, you must definitely read this book.
The story is well written, it is very entertaining, easy to read, fun, exciting and most important, it really draws you in! In my opinion, the story is a great mix of fiction and reality with many surprises, which make the reading very interesting.
I would highly recommend it to any fan of action and adventure genre.
The novel is well-written with a playful and captivating tone for kids and adults alike. My son and I really had a great time reading this... my son for the swashbuckling adventure the Castaway Kids got embroiled in, and me for the innocent and lighthearted tone that entertained my son. Overall, this was a wonderfully imaginative and action-packed kids novel that I would recommend for parents and kids alike.
A story of a group of misfits that escape misery and find high adventure and excitement the whole family can enjoy.
Looking forward to the next one.
