What comes to my mind is, for lack of a better term and avoidance of an unpleasant one, the Acts 8:30 verse: "Do you understand what you read ?"
The book is a detailed analysis of a society that is perhaps too culturally remote from American society as it was 30 years ago, let alone our PC present. The anthropologist's job is to attempt to explain how a culture works, to understand rather than judge. The analysis of the caste system, with its complicated economic and social relationships, makes for a fascinating reading. I never got the impression that Rudner was endorsing the caste system, or felt the need that he should condemn it, because that's not the point of the book.
