HARD OR SOFT SHELL YES. Hard-shell rain protection but with the stretch of a soft shell. Our new Torrent 2L Stretch fabric offers total waterproofness with outstanding stretch and good breathability, making this an ideal jacket for just about all your winter or spring riding. We've added a waterproof zipper, high collar and external seam taping to keep the water out, while vents help prevent overheating. Safety is a concern, and we've added reflective tape for 360-degree nighttime visibility.

I paid $121 for this jacket which I considered an excellent price. The MSRP of $179 seems excessive until you look at ASSOS clothing which is almost twice that price for qualities which do not, in my opinion, justify the cost. For the purposes this jacket is intended it does the job, is attractive, and well-made. Sizing, as with most European designed cycling gear is problematic, though this jacket seems to be cut in a more predictable size. A person ten pounds or more heavier than I am would likely want to go to a large. If possible, try it on in a local shop, and then buy it on Amazon in the correct size.
The fit is slim but I was expecting it to be just a bit slimmer (after all, this is a Castelli). Not a deal breaker, since it is more of a "shell" than an actual jacket. Having said that, there is still room for a couple layers underneath.
So far I like it, but I can't honestly make a statement regarding its water resistance.
