What I liked most about this book is that it wasn't full of hot air. Not inflated with a bunch of useless theory, but instead, full of practical tips that Mr. Browne is very conscientious to point out, work for HIM. These are craft tips from a master of storytelling, in my opinion. I can see much of this working for me too, but I will be taking my time with a second reading of this book, and applying the lessons within. Heck, the section on building realistic characters was worth the price of the book for me.
This is a book on writing craft. Again, in my opinion, writers don't need books on marketing. They first need to develop their craft. Awesome storytelling is the most important part of being an author.
This book, and its author, were not full of themselves. This is a book that I will be referring to for many years to come.
Thanks Mr. Browne! I've been looking forward to this book. It didn't disappoint.
As an author, I am always looking for a great book to help me get past that first blank page. I've read many books on writing that sometimes leave me scratching my head because I didn't quite "get" what the author was saying. Robert knows how to speak to his readers, teaching in a way he know's you will understand. And you can feel that he truly wants to help you succeed.
I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with their craft or wanting to enhance it.
Okay, now I'll meander ...
I've read countless books on how to write fiction, improving one's writing ... etc. Most of the books I've read focus around a semi autobiography with a few tips on the craft thrown in, and as much as I enjoy those books, I want something that is dedicated to the mechanics of the craft, clear concise advice and explanations of a fiction writer's devices. Many books about the craft spend more time/pages telling you how the author's system is a path to best-sellerdom and very little time explaining what that system is. (I don't need to be sold on a book that I've already purchased)
This book is not about a 'system' or 'method,' it is about the craft, the art of writing fiction.
If you want to waste time and money on a BS guide to best-sellerdom then check out 'How to write more better - by Who-g-M'Bob WhatsisFace'
If you want a great, no BS book about writing fiction then pick this one up. This goes on my shelf with the elements of style and the dictionary.
Thank you Robert Gregory Brown. Hopefully you see my name on a novel one day, and take some pride in knowing that you were, in part, responsible.
