Product Description

Explore the depths of Castle Dungeon in this role-playing game adventure.

Use the controller to navigate through all 20 floors of the dungeon on your way to meet the guardian dragon. Find the best magical armor and weapons to become more powerful. Each game is a different adventure with a randomly-generated environment, monsters, and treasure.

Not enough health? Wear that Adamantium Helm of Constitution you just found. Having trouble hitting? Put more points into dexterity the next time you level up. You get to decide how to build your character to beat the skeletons, mummies, and ogres blocking your path.

Castle Dungeon is perfect for fans of classic dungeon crawling games.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Rogue-like game on the Kindle January 25, 2012
Verified Purchase
In 1980, Michael Toy and Glenn Wichman developed the dungeon crawling video game Rogue for the Unix system. Since then, many dungeon-crawling games have been added to the genre of Roguelike games, with Diablo III and Torchlight being the current state of the art.

Castle Dungeon is a 1980's level game, but it's the first on the Kindle, so I thought I'd give it a try. Each screen is typically a maze or room with a few exits, and possibly a stairwell or monsters. The monsters (skeletons, mummies, bats) can drop random treasure which your character can equip.

The dungeons are randomly generated.

The difficulty level seems high -- you'll need to find healing potions before the monsters kill your character. More modern games try to avoid killing characters, especially near the beginning, but Roguelike games are typically merciless. Castle Dungeon does show some mercy, and allows you to restart a level as an option to restarting the entire game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! A real (if simple) RPG for Kindle. February 16, 2012
Verified Purchase
This is an excellent rendition of the typical dungeon crawler RPG/Rogue game. For the first one ever available, it sets the starting point for all others to follow (and I'm pretty sure more will).

The artwork is simplistic but effective, the scrolling message box very helpful, and all your stats are right in front of you so there's no jumping to menus all the time. Nice simple interface!

I haven't finished it yet, so don't know how the ending plays out, but it's kept my interest all day. I've found myself running past monsters (they are slower) just to find a healing potion in a later room, so I have the health to go back and finish them off. Or sometimes a better weapon or armor! Also, click on the center of the 5-way to take a turn and make the monsters come to you, so you can get that first hit. But be sure to kill everything on each floor before going down -- you will need that experience and whatever they drop.

I give this 5 stars for the bug-free play experience so far, and for the fun I've had. It shows that fun doesn't need fancy 16-color graphics or even having your character face the way you are moving. :) I like it very much, and plan to play it over and over.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay March 22, 2012

It was nice to see a 'rogue-like' available for Kindle. And I think it's a nice shot at making it work on a platform that's not really geared towards gaming.

The environment is pretty plain. The environments are randomized, but there's really nothing interesting about them. Mainly they just seem to be very simple mazes with a few monsters thrown into the mix.

Monsters are all standard fare - nothing remarkable. Combat is handled in an IGO UGO fashion. I had trouble determining what damage I was causing or receiving as the display for such were simple sentences in a list.

You can level up and find new accessories to wear, but the navigation around equipment felt slow and cumbersome.

Dying is strange in that you can revert back to a previous save (if I recall correctly) or start the level over from scratch.

Overall, nice try. Castle Dungeon just isn't a destination game for me at the moment. Perhaps with some refinements, variety, and UI improvements, that will change.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding February 9, 2012
Verified Purchase
This is the game I've been waiting for to add to my Kindle Games collection. I rember playing Rogue back in the 1980s (that was back when we all thought we were such tough stuff with our C-64s and 400 baud modems) and it was great. Castle Dungeon is a nice little up-date of Rogue, if you enjoy RPGs you will like this. Keep in mind it's a simple game as far as RPGs go, but well worth your $3. I'm a old guy, but I think it would be fine for bright kids as young as 9 or 10. No blood-n-guts, just alot of kill-the-evil-dragon goodness...if you have ever played D&D, you'll like this :)

Now, how about someone do a version of Super-Star Trek for the Kindle :D

5.0 out of 5 stars great to have a game like this on my old kindle! :) August 4, 2013

A great time passer when you're looking for something fun to play on your kindle. With the Kindle android generation devices dominating the amazon kindle market, it's still great to see that developers made something for the classic hardware.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's what I thought it would be April 28, 2013

This a mindless little game of going through mazes and simulating combat by pressing a button against different foes. I play this often when I need to kill a few minutes and don't feel like taxing my mind with anything intense. I really enjoy just roaming through the mazes and collecting things . . . just a fun little game.

3.0 out of 5 stars Best old style RPG I've found for Kindle. December 10, 2012
Verified Purchase
First off I'd like to say that I have been an avid gamer and reader for years, since the days of Atari and Commodore 64. I have played MUDs and MUSHs, as such I think I have a decent idea of what to expect for this type of game.

1) The game plays well, and with little lag between screens.

2) If you leave your "character" in one spot for long enough, it will leave a shadow there, though it does go away.

3) Treasure is sporadic and completely random. You may get something to help your playstyle, you may not. Items may be powerful early on, or not, and weak many layers down, or not. Some structure here would have been helpful, in my humble opinion.

4) The absence of a save between fights reminds me of many of the old style RPG titles. The game saves after you go down the stairs on each level, leaving the game anywhere else on the floor wipes any progress made.

5) No place to "vend" items, or buy items from a merchant that would be helpful to the player.

6) There are only 3 stats to improve through leveling, and no magic. Strength = damage : Dexterity = avoidance/to hit : Constitution = Health increases/damage absorption

All in all, it's the best game I have found for my Kindle as of yet in the RPG realm, other than some of the fantasy fighting books or something akin to them, where the decisions are preconceived. If you are looking for some old school dungeon romping, aren't too worried about the mechanics being perfect (like in the past), then you may have found a game that is right for you. I play it a bit when I am out and waiting in lines/doctor's office/etc.

I hope this helps the other gamers out there who are interested in finding something that you can play that can feel a little nostalgic or perhaps that gives you the first chance to see where modern RPGs got their roots.
