Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Gr 3–8—Macaulay's Cathedral (1973) and Castle (1977, both Houghton) were landmark titles for children, appealing to both those interested in history and architecture, as well as to some who found the pictures fascinating in and of themselves. Reissued with the pictures in color, they remain timeless staples for the architectural crowd. The fluid and informative texts remain basically unchanged except for some subtle clarifications and updates, with the stories of the building of the fictitious Cathedral of Chutreaux and Lord Kevin le Strange's Castle at Aberwyvern still maintaining dramatic tension even as they serve as vehicles for explaining building techniques and features. The illustrations have been extensively reworked, with cross sections replaced by dramatic three-dimensional views. The use of color is muted, employing mostly the greens, browns, grays, and blues of nature; and it is certainly effective. The older editions are enriched by viewing alongside the new ones, and vice versa. Clearly labeled diagrams; a detailed, complete, and informative glossary; and the use of full-color spreads to bring the buildings and their inhabitants or parishioners to life make these excellent additions.—Ann Welton, Grant Elementary School, Tacoma, WA
Review
"What David Macaulay can draw -- churches, cities, pyramids -- he does better than any pen-and-ink illustrator in the world. Castle once again goes through a brick-by-brick assembly, employing cross-hatches and thin black lines to evoke a medieval place and period." Time Magazine

I have owned the black and white version of this book since it was first released, but when i saw that a color version had been released, I felt a need to own it. The tale within the pages is told simply, but with sufficient detail and with great illustrations -- I use it frequently to explain the amount of time and labor necessary to build such an edifice in Medieval times. I've also used it to explain how such an undertaking today would be labor intensive, hazardous, and require specific skill sets.

This is a great review of the design and construction of a fictional Welsh castle. This version is an update of the original from the 1970's. I read the original version when I was a kid and it helped kindle a love of history that led to an MA in History and a law degree. I was so happy when I found this on Amazon that I ordered both versions. This version is in color and has some substantial revisions. It is meant to be a kids book and some of the illustrations reflect this fact, but it is fun and informative for all ages.

Built to last contains the same pages. Returned. If you're not interested in the Cathedral or Mosque then get this book. Even my 12 year old daughter was intrigued.

very nice adaptation of the original version of this book. most of the drawings are the the same but with color. there are a few new illustrations and a few that are not carried over from the previous version of the book. (I also own the original version)

This is a very nice book. In an age of app this digital that, it is a pleasure to read a book in which the art work was produced by hand.

Wasn't prepared for the new up-dated all colour edition, as I was expecting black and white as in Macauley's "Cathedral" but it's a good-looking production, clear and informative and a joy to handle, especially in hardback format.

A masterpiece of story-telling and illustration
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 25, 2016Verified Purchase
I have fond memories of reading the black and white original of this book over thirty years ago, and this colour edition is even better. David Macaulay is rightly considered both a master story-teller and an illustration genius, and his books about how different types of building - including a mosque, cathedral, city and pyramid - were designed and built, are masterpieces. Buy this book: buy them all. They are wonderful.
