Kudos to breakpointbooks for outstanding packaging with a handwritten note. The book itself is what I expected overall; a modernized AD&D 1st/2nd edition based system. Highly recommend if you’ve become disenchanted with 5E’s videogame like feel with it’s superhero players that rarely die after level 4.

I still very much like the AD&D [Advanced Dungeons and Dragons] RPG [role-playing game] series. AD&D [to me] is still an exemplar of rich and balanced Medieval-Fantasy role-playing. Older D&D seems too complex [to me] -- as does newer D&D. But, even the oldest D&D seems to have a certain richness matching Medieval-Fantasy from Camelot to Tolkien. The newest D&D has gained in some good streamlined game-play resolution methods -- but [to me] lost a classical feel towards a kind of "supergold superhero" direction with more-and-more powers added to more-and-more player-options -- adding confusing complexity to streamlined simplicity. But, AD&D [to me] also has some confusing complexity due to a large variety of game-play resolution methods, tables and charts -- that could be unified or just dropped. Yet, AD&D -- as well as all D&D -- has such rich resources as to still be inspiring.
Castles and Crusades [C&C] is a fantastic fantasy RPG in itself. This player handbook is very clear -- based on a very clear game. C&C has game-play resolution methods that are as wise and clever as any I have ever seen. For example, much as in older D&D -- there are just six stats, just seven races and just thirteen classes -- in additon, characters can have a few stats as "primary" and the others as "secondary". So, these options, when multiplied, lead to quite a large range of characters -- but based on only a few choices for each type of option. Yet, the stats, races and classes are very well-chosen for game-balance and classcial Medieval-Fantasy richness.
Amazingly, almost all C&C game-play resolution is resolved via a single type of D20 die-roll versus a twenty-point sliding-scale -- based naturally and directly on just one of the six stats -- as modified in a simple way by the other factors. So, C&C has a very rare two-for-one simple richness. But, it is actually three-for-one -- as C&C can make easy usage of many D&D-type resources -- ideas, manuals, modules and worlds -- for fantastic fantasy Swords-and-Sorcery +++

I am comparing the book only to its 4th printing counterpart. I mostly agree with others here, that C&C is a very good reincarnation of AD&D, which is easy to handle and much better playable than other systems.
The book is almost the same as in the 4th printing, including the same number of pages. The main physical difference is that the pages are no longer white with black print, but yellowish with brown print, textured akin to elephant paper. I personally dislike that change, since I wear glasses and less contrast means more difficult reading. It would probably be better if the letters were still black.
The index was changed a bit and highlights points of interest, I find it much improved when I look for something. Otherwise it is a reprint of the previous book. Maybe there were a few erratas done, but I have not come across any in the old book, and a few checks at certain passages show them to be the same still.
So if you have the 4th printing, there is no reason to get this one, if you do not, you may wish to give C&C a try with this one.

A great game. C&C does a fantastic job of simplifying the game, using a great d20 mechanic, the Siege Engine. This book is very well packed with essentials to run the game. With an emphasis and eye to making the game playable, fun, and filled with time used to adventure, not just map out a battle and start "The Grind", this game is perfect for anyone who wants to play a game where you move through the story of your character's adventures, not just play it out, one long random encounter at a time.
Congrats to C&C on this great game, with a beautifully done book that is rich with information and color, and very well organized.
Thanks!

Ich bin sehr zufrieden mit diesem AD&D-esken Retroclon. Klassen, Spielmechanik etc. scheinen sehr stimmig. Das Spiel bereitet viel Spaß. Super!
