Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered edition of this album from the French pianist and composer. With this dramatic collection, Legrand continues his orchestral portraits of Europe's splendid cities and countries, this time portraying the dazzling lights and deep shadows of Spain. The itinerary which has touched on Paris, Rome and Vienna now moves through the historic Spanish cities and across the broad plains, into the towering mountains and along the seacoast. The music of Spain is especially characteristic of the country, echoing the Moorish cultures, the Renaissance, the contemporary, the brilliant diversity of the Spanish landscape. El Records.

I first heard this album as an LP in the 1950's. I played it so many times, it made me long to go to Spain, and I did in the early 1980's. For a long time this Michel Legrand recording was not available on CD. He did a series of albums that reflected the music of a particular country: I Love Paris, and Holiday in Rome. I had all three LP's then and hope to have all three CD's now. I just never tire of these Legrand recordings and hearing the background sounds peculiar to a country.Just makes it easier to recall my visits to Rome, Paris and Seville.

IN MY PERSONAL OPINION, THIS IS THE ALBUM THAT BETTER REMEMBER FROM LEGRAND. MY FATHER BUYED THE LP WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER AND I WERE FASCINATED WITH IT. I STILL HAVE THE OLD LP AND IWAS VERY HAPPY WHEN I FIND IT WITH YOU IN CD.

I'M 64 YEARS OLD AND A FAN OF THE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC AND BALLADS OF THE LATE 50'S AND 60'S.

I had searched for this album in CD form for years having worn out the black vinyl. Finally it showed up, having been just re-issued in 2007. On first playing, I was a little disappointed with the clipped fidelity, but after all, it was originally recorded in 1956.
After that original playing, I found myself listening to it over and over. This unique orchestration could be played in the concert hall as a continuous piece. You are transported from the dance hall, to the bullfights, to the "Castles in Spain". Not to be missed!!!

I have this album in my LP collection courtesey of my father. He always said it was his all time favorite Legrand album. Legrand has MANY good albums, but this one is truly one of his best. It's unfortunate that Columbia still hadn't switched over to stereo yet. It was recorded in 1956. RCA was already recording in stereo by 1954, why not Columbia? This album really would have benefited from this. But it's still enjoyable. When I purchased this cd, I was worried that since it's not an official US release, that the sound quality would be bad. But I was surprised that it sounded good. Much better than my worn out original pressing. The album captures the full flavor and spirit of Spain, complete with sounds of matadors and other Spanish activities. But without question, the absolute highlight of this album is the magnificent arrangement of "Jungle Drums". If you have heard the ones by Morton Gould, Stanley Black (both versions), Artie Shaw and the rest, forget about them. This is the GREATEST arrangement EVER. I dare ANY arranger to even come close to the sheer genius that Legrand cooked up for this gem. It begins with trumpets in an echo style call and response, then as they fade string enter and glide to an oboe solo. Then the brass re-enter and attack in recapitulation before the strings introduce the main melody over the muted harmonies of the trumpets. Sheer genius. Absolutely NOTHING will do for this song other than Legrand. Makes Black and Gould sound tame by comparison. Sure those guys have stereo sound, but their arrangementa fall short. Buy this cd for this recording alone. It's worth it!

Castles in Spain is a great addition to your Music library if you are a fan of Michael Legrand.
I grew up listening to his music. My mother introduced me to his music when I was a child. Back then (1960's) it was sitting by the stereo listening to the LP's and letting my thoughts go where the music took me. The music is exciting and also tender touching your soul.
