Product Description

Forget all of the machismo, glory of battle nonsense that you've heard about bike commuting. In reality, not the grandiose story pages of trolls splitting lanes with battle axes in-tow, the commuter's goal is actually pretty simple: Don't get hit by car. So, we recommend riding predictably, responsibly, and with the proper safety equipment. Yes, this means front and rear lights, and preferably rear lights with power, like the CatEye Rapid 5 Tail Light. A tail light serves one function, and that's to raise your visual presence to the awareness of motorists. To achieve this, the Rapid 5 tail light uses a five LED design that provides visibility in nearly all directions. At the center of the light row is a powerful SMD-LED that jolts light unmistakably forward to those behind you. Flanking this hub are two 5mm LEDs that cover out 45 degree angles from the center light. And finally, the very sides of the lights have another two SMD-LEDs that beam out 90 degrees to the side. Together, the system of lights provides a powerful, 180 degree rear coverage. Mounting the Rapid 5 is a simple affair. The light comes equipped with CatEye's SP-11 FlexTight bracket that attaches to the seatpost. However, the light is also compatible with CatEye's all-new RM-1 saddle rail bracket should you wish for a more streamlined placement. In terms of modes, the Rapid 5 has four. For a maximum output, and the shortest battery life, there's Constant. The next three, Rapid, Pulse, and Flashing, feature various stages of flashing motion and intensity. All in all, the Rapid 5 has a battery life ranging from 15 to 50 hours depending on your mode selection. The light requires two AAA batteries, which come included. The CatEye Rapid 5 Tail Light is available in the color Black and in one size. Each light includes the SP-11 FlexTight mounting bracket and two AAA batteries.

I only gave the Rapid Five three stars because it does not have really good 180 degree visibility as it claims to have. It says that it has LEDs that point 90 degrees to the left and right. That may be. I can't say for sure because I was not able to pry the lens off. But it's just not all that bright when viewed from the sides. It's much, much brighter when viewed from the back than from the sides.

I compared it with an older Cateye back light that I have, the TD LD 1000. Now that light really does have LEDs mounted on the left and the right, and it's really bright when viewed from the sides.

See the video clip that I uploaded. You can see the difference in the side views between the Rapid Five and the older TD LD 1000, and you can see that the older Cateye is much brighter when viewed from the side than the newer Rapid Five. And as viewed by the naked eye, the difference is even greater than the video clip shows it to be.

If you go to Cateye's very own website (just google "Cateye Rapid Five), they have a photo of the Rapid Five in the bottom right-hand side of the page showing how light disperses from this unit. As you'll see, it does a good job at 0 degrees (straight back), a reasonable job at 50 degrees (diagonally back to the left and right, but only very little at 90 degrees (directly left and right). I can't understand why they claim that the light has "two more side mounted high-power SMD-LEDs for maximum visibility from all directions.".

It's a small step up from the TLD-600 but it is an improvement. The center LED is stronger and has a larger lens to focus the light. It's also slightly more visible when viewed from an angle. A BIG improvement is that now it only turns on if you hold down the on button for a second or so. The previous model turned on at the slightest touch. On several occasions it turned on in my backpack or in my coat pocket, so I ended up taping a plastic piece on top of the on button to prevent this from happening. I haven't had to do that with this model.

I'd recommend it!

I haven't had experience with a wide range bicycle safety lights, but after searching the web for the best choice I decided to pull the trigger on the Rapid 5. I am very happy with it so far. The LEDs are extremely bright and noticeable even in daylight, and the blinking pattern really does grab your attention. I have only owned the Rapid 5 for a couple of weeks, so I can't speak to its long-term reliability, but it seems well-built. Installation was also super easy (additionally, you can mount it either horizontally or vertically via the quick-release mechanism).

I would definitely recommend the Rapid 5 to anyone looking for extra visibility while riding on the road.

I've got to say, that this is the best light I've ever used. Powered by tiple AAA's which I appritiate over expensive flat lithum batterys it gets a decent enough life for a "couple hours per week" rider like myself. The four selectable modes are nice. The first mode is kind of gimmiky. It looks like a police flasher. Mode two is a bright then dim pulsating mode. Third is the traditional LED flasher or blink for high visablity. Last is a constant on. Between one of these you should find one that will suite your needs and personality. Visablity is excellent from directly behind. It's not bad from angles but (and trust me I'm not complaining as I didn't expect it to) there's no such thing as 180 degree visablity. The rubber mount that comes with it locks down well enough but I recommend buying the metal seat post mount if it fits your bike.

This light just makes me SO relieved I invested in a good light. During a trail run in rain, with hardly ANY light (because my el-cheapo CreeQ5 front light was sputtering) this CatEye Rapid 5 light was still going strong! If I had noticed sooner I could have used it to light the way through the trail : P At least just that one time : ( I'm on a month now and the batteries are still going good!

ps: Because I was so happy with the quality, simplicity and ruggedness of this tail light, I decided to get the CatEye Nano Shot Plus as a replacement for a terrible choice I had previously made with a front-light purchase. I'm now confident I won't lose any illumination next time I go out on the trail in pitch-darkness!

I am alwasy paranoid about riding on the streets and especially on the country roads. Traffic move too fast, especially around the turns and they may not see you. This rear light, combined with the new rack mount Cateye RM-1 (at the time Amazon has not carried it, I had to order the mount from Cateye website) will definitely help you to be seen. Several blinking modes, from extreme obnoxious to subtle. The light is wide, about the width of my saddle.

I may look funny on the street, but much safer than before with other rearlights.

The best part is that this light won't be able to accidently turned "ON" or bumped "OFF". You have to hold the button in for it to start and/or stop it's light sequence. There are several unique lighting sequences to choose from. I call one of them "rave: epileptic seizure". It is my favorite. :-D I feel much safer riding at night with this one. I wish there was a better way to hang it from a backpack instead of installing to the bicycle. I have devised a loop system, but it doesn't hang with optimal exposure. I am just sayin'...
