 (70)
55min20167+
Cats - hundreds and hundreds of them - define the quiet island of Tashirojima. They have just a handful of elderly human residents for company, who maintain a life steeped in fading but beautiful Japanese culture. This heart-warming documentary explores how a tight-knit community of ever more wizened pensioners find joy in their unique island identity, and affection from their feline friends.

I have been aware of this island and it's cat tourist attraction for many years through Internet exposure. This is the most recent documentary chronologically that I have seen, and I am thankful that the inhabitants and Japan are helping the island to recover from the earthquake. I sincerely wish that more young people do come to live there, and that the government will help this effort by hiring teachers, building a school and a hospital. It would be nice that if the veterinarian who visits cannot become a resident, that the island also acquires a full time veterinarian!

Excellent documentary about a small island in Japan inhabited by a population of only about 50 humans and hundreds of cats. The first part of the documentary focus on the cats and the people who take care of them, but if you aren't a cat person, watch it anyway. The second half focuses on the people of the island and their community. I have never had a desire to visit Japan but after watching this documentary, I would love to visit this small island. The movie is entirely in Japanese but the closed captioning/subtitles are the best I've seen (even tells you what the cats are saying!) and really enhances the experience of watching. I hope that Amazon keeps this for a long time because I could watch it over and over, not only for the beautiful scenery and the music but for the wonderful message that's hidden inside.

The people, the cats, the island itself: unforgettable!

I am a great cat lover, but it is the people featured in this documentary who really stole my heart. Although they are blessed to live in such a beautiful natural setting, there are serious challenges to their way of life, and I found my heart lifted by the way they support each other through those challenges. I was also impressed by their typically cheerful, positive demeanor. They seem to take the stance that "Together, we've got this," which endeared them to me and made me wish I could know them.

Beautiful story

This is a heartwarming story of a tiny Japanese island that has been working to get back on its feet since the 2013 earthquake and tsunami. It shows the kitty cat inhabitants and pets, as well as, the many people who have called the island home. I hope the documentary creates a great little tourist industry for the island with such sweet people and their feline friends. It reminded me of slow island time in Hawaii though it is far off in Japan. I hope someone adds it to IMDB too.

Not just for cat lovers.

A heartwarming movie. "You need a healthy amount of irresponsibility. Things work out. Don't think you can ever accompolish anything when you're worried about making plans, and worrying about this or that. So, maybe you could say, "take it easy." You can do it." I can't help but want to travel to the peaceful island Tashirojima that is full of cats, self-supporting, resilient elderly.

This is such a beautiful and well shot documentary! I adore cats so of course I was interested when I saw this documentary available. But it is about so much more than just cats. It is so rich and full of the culture of this particular Japanese island. This documentary is so touching and so incredibly beautiful!!

A nice documentary

It is Japanese with English subtitles.
This is a nice little work. It was fun to be brought into the lives of the residents of this little island. The title suggests that It is about cats, but it is actually about the human population of the island. Softly and without pretension it draws us into their lives, and by the end we (I at least) felt kindly toward them. I wish them well.
