This GREAT album, featuring the joyous hard-swinging boogie and blues piano of Meade Lux Lewis, is one mighty fine treat. Accompanied by stellar jazz musicians Red Callender and Papa Jo Jones on the first half; and then drummer Louis Bellson on the second half of the album, Lewis struts his stuff - showing beyond reasonable doubt that he was THE master of the blues piano idiom. Recordings were made in 1954 and 1955, so the sound quality is beautiful, allowing the listener to hear every detail of the music. Too bad this record is so hard to find...however, it is most highly recommended.

This CD contains the the grand master of boogie-woogie, Meade Lux Lewis, at his very best. While all the tracks are very good, the final six are exceptional. The liner notes come from the original album, Cat House Piano, which contained the first eight tracks. The final six tracks were recorded earlier in a separate album originally titled Boogie-Woogie Piano and Drums (Louis Bellson, on drums) and subsequently under the title Yancey's Last Ride. My favorite tracks are Shooboody and Yancey's Last Ride. The latter is one of the most beautiful and moving boogie-woogie pieces ever recorded.

It's hard to not like Lewis's good boogie-woogie, barrel-house, and stride piano. This is a fine album that I find gets me sort of dancing even when I play it in the background. There are a number of terrific moments (cut #8 is my favorite) and nothing less than good. A real mood enhancer.

We used this as background music for a 20's chicago gangster themed murder mystery party along with some other "all that Jazz" type music and it fit right in and everybody loved it. To put it on and listen to it straight through can get monotonous, though.
