In November 2022, Cat Power took the stage at London's Royal Albert Hall and delivered a song-for-song recreation of one of the most fabled and transformative live sets of all time. Held at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in May 1966 - but long known as the "Royal Albert Hall Concert" due to a mislabeled bootleg - the original performance saw Bob Dylan switching from acoustic to electric midway through the show, drawing ire from an audience of folk purists and forever altering the course of rock-and-roll. In her own rendition of that historic night, the artist otherwise known as Chan Marshall inhabited each song with equal parts conviction and grace and a palpable sense of protectiveness, ultimately transposing the anarchic tension of Dylan's set with a warm and luminous joy. Now captured on the live album Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert, Marshall's spellbinding performance both lovingly honors her hero's imprint on history and brings a stunning new vitality to many of his most revered songs.

Now in my late 70's, I have lived with Dylan's music since my 20's, glad to be on this planet in the same time. I have dozens of albums of covers by various artists. This is one of the best I've ever heard. It's like somehow she got right under the skin of these songs - wonderful singing and amazingly charismatic finesse with the essential words. She has tapped into the essence of these songs. Thrilling, great - if you love Bob you will very much enjoy these versions!

La storia la conoscono tutti. E' il 1966 e Dylan ha deciso di cambiare il mondo, almeno quello della musica folk d'autore. Durante il celebre concerto alla Manchester Free Hall, immortalato su disco più volte ed erroneamente indicato come quello della Royal Albert Hall, Mr.Zimmerman passa inopinatamente dalla rassicurante chitarra acustica a quella elettrica, sconvolgendo lo zoccolo duro dei suoi fans devoti al folk dei sixties. L'effetto è dirompente e se ne parlerà per decenni. Ma Dylan non tornerà più indietro, la via ormai è segnata e anche per questo Dylan oggi siede alla destra di Dio. Cat Power è da sempre una grandissima fan del menestrello di Duluth e quando in autunno le si è prentata l'occasione di suonare alla Royal Albert Hall non ha avuto dubbi. Il suo concerto sarebbe stato un remake integrale di quello del suo idolo. Splendida idea, splendido disco. Dentro c'è tutta Chan Marshall, non più adolescente geniale e scostante nelle sue insicurezze. Sul palco oggi c'è una donna cresciuta in pubblico che omaggia il suo idolo con devozione ma senza timore, alla faccia dei fantasmi che l'hanno sempre perseguitata. Le versioni sono abbastanza fedeli agli originali e Chan Marshall è ispiratissima, così come la band che la accompagna. E qui si compie il miracolo della donna dalle mille contraddizioni. L'adolescente che vagabondava per l'America alla ricerca di se stessa trova la sua dimensione più luminosa e convinta. Il pubblico della Royal Albert Hall è in visibilio, noi che ascoltiamo questo disco pure.
