Editorial Reviews

Hilarious, gritty and fully loaded with intense action, Cat Run stars Paz Vega (Spanglish) as a high-end call girl on the run for her life. With key evidence to the scandalous government cover-up of a shockingly horrific crime, she must rely on two bumbling private detectives (Scott Mechlowicz, Alphonso McAuley) to be her unlikely protectors from a deadly combination of the Mob, a corrupt U.S. senator and a ruthlessly sadistic female assassin (Janet McTeer, Tumbleweeds) – all of whom will stop at nothing to hide the truth. This stylish, sexy, fast-moving action thrill ride is directed by John Stockwell (Crazy/Beautiful).

The movie opens with a high level party which includes many nude call girls. Cat (Paz Vega), one of the escorts at the party who managed to keep her clothes on, witnesses the killing of multiple guests, including other girls, is on the lam. She steals a car and phone from two Americans who provide the comic relief for the film (Alphonso McAuley and Scott Mechlowicz). McAuley talks Scott into being a detective, "C'mon man. Be a dic." They open up an office in a porno theater with secretary D.L. Hughley.

The nasty killing incident was caught on tape. Cat steals the hard drive from a computer before she leaves the party. An assassin, Helen aka Virginia Wolf (also goes by Emily Bronte), is called in to kill her. Played by Janet McTeer she reminded me of Helen Mirren in "Red". She has a dry humor to her as she is a polite "Mary Poppins" killer. In one scene she apologizes to a man she has tortured for "taking up so much of his morning...but you do understand my need to be thorough." She also has her own theme music (Zombies' "She's not there") which is part of the fun.

The whole world is searching for the missing Paz. Our hero detectives decide to make her their first case. Paz scams her way across Europe (funny how guys want to help a beautiful woman sporting legs and cleavage) and from TV news shows she realizes the killings involved an important US government official.

The movie creates wonderful characters. It has numerous funny lines and some with sexual innuendos, for instance:

Hughley claims the shark ate his wife piece by piece. McAuley asks, "Didn't he eat her whole?" Hughley, "Yeah. He ate that too.

Whew! OK, it begins with a plethora of gratuitous nudity, and the characters have to be introduced with profiles, I guess so we can keep track. A whole lot of gratuitous violence and killing follows. Then, it has its comedic moments, and the whole picture starts making sense after about an hour. If one is patient enough, there's a really great movie here. Good guys are bad, bad guys are good. Remember, this movie requires patience--unless one's in it for the nudity and violence.

I did not think this movie would be as good as it was. The characters were very good actors and believable for the most. I will say to stay away from this movie if you are offended by nudity as there is full frontal nudity within the first 10 minutes.

That is exactly what happened with this gem of a movie. Scott Mechlowicz and Alphonso Mcauley star as our heroes? they are both so likable and funny. There is a very straight laced lady assassin...tremendous and quite nasty too. Paz Vega as Cat seems along for a very fun ride. Dark humor and great dialogue and sensational acting make this a big thumbs up for me. What a very pleasant surprise.

Despite the yellow cover, this is not an action movie. It's simply an absurd comedy with a lot of graphic violence. The dialog is funny. The assassin reminds me of the anthropology professor I took food and culture from, which is a little scary, as that class was stupidly hard, and now I have a an image of a psychopath worthy of a SAW movie of her very own to reconcile.

The acting is medicore, the action is pathetic. The directors choice of cutting leaves a lot to be desired in my mind. It opens with a lot of bare breasts that serve no real purpose.

Think of it is a comedy with lots of politically incorrect dialog. I enjoyed this movie.
