What would you say if you saw a mountain lion in your local park?
This imaginative tale is based on the true story of P22 mountain lion who lives in Griffith Park in Los Angeles
Leaving Home
P22 mountain lion is born in the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains outside Los Angeles, California. He has a playful childhood, learning how to hunt with his Mama and his brother, and making friends with the local wildlife.. Pen and ink drawings begin each chapter giving readers the chance to visualise each of the characters and the world they inhabit. But there isn't enough space for a young mountain lion in the Santa Monica Mountains and there is the ever present threat of Prime, the dominant lion in the area, who wants P22 dead.
Adventure
After a close tussle with Prime, P22 decides that his only option is to head east to stake out a new territory of his own in the bright lights of the big city. Along the way, he makes friends as well as enemies, and crosses two dangerous freeways, the 405 and 101, that's ten lanes of traffic each.
Dangers
The book has an underlying conservation message which will appeal to readers and want them to find out more. As well as crossing two major freeways, P22 has to avoid humans some of whom aren't friendly, and there's the ever present threat of rat poison which works its way up the food chain and casts a shadow on the welfare of all wildlife. At the end of the book there are links for further reading, including the building of a wildlife crossing over the 101 freeway this year, as well as a social diary of P22's exploits based on his real life events.
Humor
Each of the animals have their own quirky personalities which readers will fall in love with. There's a Possum who is P22's childhood friend who won't play dead; and a rough and ready Raccoon who shows P22 the way to Griffith Park and how to find dinner from trash cans. They pass through the City of Stars at night, and stroll down the Hollywood Walk of Fame, all the while trying to avoid those bothersome humans. After more adventures, P22 reaches the edges of Griffith Park. Can he make it his new home?

Review
"This is an interesting tale created around an actual mountain lion born in the mountains of California. His name is P22 which comes from the region where he finally settled. The author has created an intriguing story about this animal who did an amazing thing - he crossed two highways to get to the forest area where he wanted to make his hunting ground and new home. He included a few other animals in the story with whom P22 interacted - a couple opossums, llamas and his father. . . Children will enjoy reading about P22 and cheer him on as he strives to find a new home in spite of the dangers he must face." - Janice Spina, Children's author.
"The book does a great job of bringing P22 and his animal friends to life. It has something of a Disney vibe to it that will suit a younger audience. It's a charming book and the characters all have their own fun personalities. Of course, it isn't just a load of twee fiction. The book includes plenty of fact and insight. It doesn't shy away from the realities of the animal world and you get a good idea of what P22 might have had to face. . .It's a very enjoyable and fun read" - Motherbooker.
"This is a great way to introduce younger kids to the challenges mountain lions are facing in California. You will find this book worth picking up as it is a well balanced blend of reality and fantasy which makes it educational, inspirational and fun to read!" - Purr and Roar

There’s more foreshadowing! Mom and her cubs one day meet Prime. There’s a secret the reader comes to learn about Prime, “the dominant mountain lion in the woods,” according to Mom who also tells the cubs that “there isn’t enough room in the mountains for all of us, especially if you’re a male mountain lion.”
Tragedy befalls the family and eventually P22 is forced to leave his home. He is confronted with many challenges, dangers and, still, Prime, as well as cars, coyotes and rodenticides! But ultimately, after a harrowing journey of 60 miles, P22 finds a new home in Griffith Park in Los Angeles.
Moral does a great job of interspersing lots of facts about cats and the problems facing wildlife into the narrative, so “The Cat That Changed America” is both a good read and an educational one.

Moral does a great job of interspersing lots of facts about cats and the problems facing wildlife into the narrative, so “The Cat That Changed America” is both a good read and an educational one.

Starting as a young kitten with his mum and brother, the three of them lived together for a few years until the boys were old enough to move on and start their own lives. Along his journey to his new home P22 meets a lot of wildlife. Some friendly, the others not so much. He also needs to navigate his way carefully to avoid the humans and their metal machines.
In all honesty, I’d never heard of P22 and how famous he was in America. The Mountain lion who made Griffith Park, Los Angeles his home. From what I’ve learned is that the Mountain Lions were being monitored and each given a letter P and a number. So p22 was the 22nd Mountain Lion that was monitored and named.
The story isn’t just about P22’s life and him moving from his home to Griffith Park, but also about conservation and what we as a society need to do to help our wildlife. Because P22 moved to an area not known for Mountain Lions, an area more associated with human and smaller animals and he became an overnight star. P22 being in the park led to talks about how to help the lion population and keep them safe.
The book is a fictional account of P22’s life, though a lot of factual information has been kept in to educate children. The chapters were quite short with an illustration at the beginning of each one, which I was underwhelmed with as they are black and white roughly drawn sketches of the lions that to me looked nothing like a Mountain Lion. I prefer children’s books to have colourful, engaging illustrations in them to bring the story to life.
Overall, it is an intriguing read that mixed facts and fiction together and gave a backstory to P22’s life.

A wonderful book documenting the journey of “P22”, a brave mountain lion, who was forced out of his natural environment. You’ll be rooting for him the entire time as he encounters multiple scary obstacles. This is the second book I read by Tony Lee — what an exceptional writer, who always makes you feel like you are right there in the moment.
