First, it obviously uses a standard 18650 sized cell, the same size used in laptop packs. They are easily purchased separately but CatEye packages it tightly away, so you're forced to go through them for replacements.
Second, there's no state of charge indicator. If you want a lithium battery to last a long time (and you do - see my previous comment), it's best to store it at about half charged, then charge it before you use it but the only way to estimate charge is to remove the cell and check it with a multimeter. When charged completely (the light turns green), voltage was around 4.2V, which means it's charging to 100%. That helps the total on time - when it's new - but accelerates degradation if you regularly charge it to full and let it sit.
Reason #1: 700 lumens is about as strong as a road bicyclist needs. I have an L & M Seca 1500 and rarely need the 2nd level, let alone the highest.
Reason #2: The blinkie part is perfect in that it's not super bright, which cars detest, but it's bright enough to get attention.
Reason #3; While being entirely plastic, the mount is very easy on/off.
Many of my lights have been USA companies Light & Motion and Cygolite, so one reason I knocked it down one star is that it's made in China. Another slight negative is that the low level is ridiculously low so much so that I've never used it.
Overall, it's a worthy investment if you don't mind the 2 negatives.
While I am not a fan of proprietary batteries, I *love* that this has a removable battery. I purchased a second battery that I keep with me in case of emergency. (i.e. evening rides that go long due to mechanical issues during the ride.) Since the light is detachable, I actually keep the light in my backpack should the need arise.

It was great while it worked but not happy for how long it lasted.
