Catapult Aircraft: Seaplanes That Flew From Ships Without Flight Decks Kindle Edition
During World War I, the navies of the opposing forces discovered the value of aerial reconnaissance and many experiments were made to allow larger warships to carry one or sometimes two aircraft aboard. In the early days these were float planes that were lowered by crane into the sea and then lifted back aboard upon their return. This was a lengthy affair and when a speedy departure was necessary, time was of the essence. A new system was devised so that a powerful catapult system and a short ramp could, with the added speed of the ship, get an aircraft airborne in a fraction of the time previously required. Thus was born a highly specialised type of aircraft. This book includes all the major designs that went to war in the First and Second World Wars and includes aircraft used by all the combatants. It looks at how the aircraft evolved and how the warships were modified to accommodate the aircraft and the catapult system. The use of these fixed-wing aircraft was abandoned when the invention of the helicopter was made in the early post WW II years.

This is a concise history of the development of catapult launched seaplane in use by the major navies of the world during the period when these aircraft were in use. It covers many aircraft types not generally covered in aviation histories. I enjoyed it in part because I own an amphibian and enjoy flying in it very much.

Aircraft and aircraft carriers that operated them from flight decks are well documented. This book looks at the little-known seaplanes that flew (and returned) to battleships and cruisers that had no flight deck. This era began in WW I and lasted until 1949. All major navies did this and the book looks at them all. This slim book does a good job at examining why these airplanes went to sea, their war record, the impact on ship design to accommodate them.

This is a nice book but it gives you very little detail about the planes and the way they were constructed, and practically nothing on how the catapults were constructed and how they functioned. Some nice photos of the planes, though.

An enjoyable read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 3, 2011Verified Purchase
This book is an excellent summary of the catapult aircraft history from the beginning to WW2 (aircraft launched from warship catapults, not aircraft carrier ones). The author has covered the UK, US, Italy, Germany, France, Japan developments in specific chapters, and covered other nations under a final chapter. Good black and white pictures are available throughout.
Only four stars because I would have liked to see:
- more technical details on catapult mechanisms and technologies (e.g., drawings, table comparing capacities/speeds).
- detailed drawings of flying platforms and catapults on warships.
but I would certainly recommend this book as it is an easy read.

飛行機の発達史
Reviewed in Japan on December 8, 2007Verified Purchase
カタパルトから発信する飛行機の概説書と言えます。先月(1月号)の「航空ファン」のレビューに掲載されています。また、記憶ですが「エアー・インターナショナル」の書評ページかに掲載されていたかな。さて、内容は副題の「THE STORY OF SEAPLANE FLOWN FROM BATTLESHIP,CRUISERS AND OTHER WARSHIPS OF THE WORLD`S NAVIES,1912〜1950」とある通りです。
