Standalone though part of a larger series
Told from Mia's POV
Minor editing errors
I have read all of the books Ella Fox has written. Her Hart series is extremely intense and passionate so I was curious what this series about college kids would be about.
She took me by surprise. The book is just as intense and deals with real life situations but the intimate scenes are tasteful for the age group.
Mia dealt with something no high schooler should ever have to deal with and she weathered the storm the best she could but it changed her forever. She starts college a shell of her previous self and is very leery of all the new people she is meeting. Darby her roommate is hysterical. She definitely got lucky there.
When she meets Tristan sparks fly but she keeps her walls up. Tristan being the amazing book boyfriend he is breaks down those walls when she isn't even looking and the rest is history.
I don't want to give away anything but the book will break your heart and keep you on your toes till the very end but like with all books a lot of people get their happily ever after.
Great read! Excited to read book 2!
Tristan Chamberlain is a sophomore that has garnered a reputation as a total man-whore on campus. He is gorgeous, sexy and charismatic. Dangerous.
He sets his sights immediately on Mia and the chase begins.
Mia's roommate, Darby, is a childhood friend of Tristan's. So Mia cannot avoid running into Tristan.
There is a side story with Darby that has interesting plot twists (small ones, but interesting).
Mia is a strong, independent woman that has survived a very earth shattering event. I admired her fortitude, dedication to her friends, mother, step-dad, etc.
Not only has Mia suffered a mind-numbing horrific incident, but her biological father never loved her.
Tristan also has a broken past that later comes out to Mia.
Mia's reaction is beautiful.
I just finished reading another book where the heroine constantly wanted to run away. First reaction. Run. Hide.
But Mia's reaction is fantastic. She kicks butt. She doesn't run - she takes action.
Love this character. This girl has been through hell and back - and she is strong enough to help carry Tristan (just for a few hours) in the relationship and bring him back to her.
Tristan is a dream. He understands that Mia is completely nervous and needs to go slow.
He goes slowly.
Lots of sexual tension.
Sex is not a big part of this book. In fact I think there is two sex scenes? Steamy yes. But not an integral part of this book.
This book is about two wonderful characters healing each other. Being friends first. Building trust and respect first. Then launching into a mutually sexual relationship.
I really liked both characters.
Would love to have Mia and Darby as friends. Reliable, trustworthy, true-blue friends.
Tristan is also trustworthy, sexy and strong. He has issues he is dealing with - but he is not destructive nor harmful. He just feels unworthy sometimes.
Not only do you read about how they start a friendship and a relationship with each other - but how they help and support their friends as well. They are not selfish people, if the see someone else hurting - they immediately go to help.
There are no big misunderstandings.
no big cliffhanger - there is a happpy ending, then after we bask in the glow of HEA - the author throws in a new plot twist. Ta da! It made me want to read the next book - but I wasn't floundering in desperation to read it. I was okay with the ending she gave to us. So don't worry about it leaving you with an unfinished ending.
No severe (walking around like gloom and doom) angst going on. Both are broken, but it doesn't make the book sad nor dark. It's interesting to read about their relationship growing as friends first.
The villain (won't say who) makes a big scene at the end. This didn't really sit 100% true to me. The villain wasn't physically violent in the first place. Wasn't sure why all of a sudden he went psycho and physical. Didn't fit the M.O. of this bad person.
Things wrapped up really quickly and too easily for the bad guys (there are more than one). But I still wanted to fist pump someone over these evils dudes getting their just desserts.
I got my HEA. Cool.
