Clothes may make the man, but lack of them make the toddler. Nancy Coffelt and Scott Nash explore the dynamics of this eternal verity in the madcap "Catch That Baby!". Rudy is a baby by trade. And, dang it, sometimes a baby just has to revolt against the stifling constraints of society, even if the revolt has to take the form of tearing around the house, fresh from the bath, nekkid as a jaybird. The whole extended family---mom, dad, brother, sister, grandparents, and family dog---are in hot, giddy, amused pursuit, but Rudy's exhilaration (he bellows out his personal credo "Nudie Rudy!!" at regular intervals) is simply ungovernable. "Where is that naked baby?" everybody wants to know. What happens? Well, I won't spoil the ending, but decorum is eventually reestablished........on Rudy's haberdasherial terms.

Ms. Coffelt wrote the text, Mr. Nash did the artwork. There isn't a children's picture-book consumer alive who would fail to be tickled pink by this delightful and only marginally naughty ode to domestic anarchy. Rudy's a slippery little devil, all right, but anybody allergic to male frontal nudity in children's lit need not fret. Nudge nudge, say no more.

In short, buy this book, and your wee ones will love you for it. It's funny and warm and clever and true and immensely re-readable. Instant classic!

CATCH THAT BABY by Nancy Coffelt. What is more -- shall we say -- cheeky than a little boy, fresh out of the tub, who scoots away and dashes about the house before his mother can catch him? Rudy, the little dickens, makes it out of the bathroom and into the living room, past siblings, Pop and grandparents, nekkid as a jay bird, shouting his signature line "Nudie Rudy!" This is a fun, forty-page romp for four-year-olds and above, full of lively drawings by Scott Nash and very little language. If you have a little exhibitionist in the house, might as well acknowledge his propensity to run wild with the understanding that he will -- eventually -- be caught and clothed. My version was hardbound and surely if you have multiple children or they have children of their own it's going to be a multigenerational keeper.

My "naked baby" loves to run and laugh when he's naked, so the cover instantly reminded me of him and made me want to buy this book. I do have to admit, when I flipped through it when I received it, I thought it was a little silly. But, upon (repeatedly) reading it to my 20-month-old, his giggles at Nudie Rudy's antics made me fall in love with this book. He loves pointing out where Rudy is hiding on every page, and the different family members. I often catch him saying "Nudie Rudy!" as he babbles to himself throughout the day, too. We have a lot of books, but this is definitely one of his favorites.

We bought this one after loving Uh-Oh Baby. The wording scheme doesn't flow as well and it's not as appealing to the kids for that reason but illistrations are eye-catching and fun. This concept appeals more to my older kids, age range 4-5, but the book seems more directed at a younger audience. For that reason we don't read it as often. I could take it or leave it and I wouldn't re-purchase if something tragic happened to it today (unlike Uh-Oh Baby).

My 2year old grandson laughs aloud every day when we read him this book. We read him this book at least once, but usually several times a day and it never fails to amuse us. Go Nudie Rudie!
