Editorial Reviews

Review

"Deliciously dark and wickedly unique, CATCH ME WHEN I FALL is a page-turning paranormal unlike anything I've read before." - Susan Dennard, author of SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY and TRUTHWITCH

"I love Vicki's take on nightmares and supernatural protectors and the unique mythology that she creates to piece together the world of the Protectors of the Night. Fans of Cassandra Clare's MORTAL INSTRUMENTS will especially enjoy." - Ava Jae, author of BEYOND THE RED

"Five stars!" - Katherine Howe, NYT Bestselling author of The PHYSICK BOOK OF DELIVERANCE DANE and CONVERSION

About the Author

Adopted at three-days-old by a construction worker and a stay-at-home mom, Vicki Leigh grew up in a small suburb of Akron, Ohio where she learned to read by the age of four and considered being sent to her room for punishment as an opportunity to dive into another book. By the sixth grade, Vicki penned her first, full-length screenplay. If she couldn't be a writer, Vicki would be a Hunter (think Dean and Sam Winchester) or a Jedi. Her favorite place on earth is Hogwarts (she refuses to believe it doesn't exist), and her favorite dreams include solving cases alongside Sherlock Holmes. She is a former acquisitions editor for Curiosity Quills Press and is currently a criminology major at a university in Ohio--and hopes to one day catch her own bad guys.

Thank you Curiosity Quills Press for providing me with an advanced reading copy for review.

Catch Me When I Fall is yet another novel which stands out in the aspect of 'good premise, bad execution'. Never before have I wanted to love an ARC so much but just couldn't. The premise of this book is something I had never heard before. After reading the synopsis I was all set to go on an amazing adventure I would never forget. It was original and therefore caught my attention in an instant. However, the originality was only to be seen in the beginning of the book, because all the rest was something I'd seen countless times before.

To discuss the premise of this book, you can't but agree that the idea behind it is absolutely brilliant. Seven billion people having two Protectors watching over them isn't all too realistic if you ask me, yet the idea of creating something more out of the guardian angel legend is amazing. Leigh did what few authors couldn’t do and managed to build an intriguing world around that particular idea. I loved the world building despite several info dumps. I loved the combination of a Guardian Angel with dreams and nightmares. I haven’t read anything like this before and I absolutely loved it. This was what made me want to read this book so desperately. I think you can guess by now how big of a disappointment this turned out to be.

The romance took over the entire book so much that in the end I felt like I was drowning in it. It all started with a case of young teen love where all of the sudden the insta-love escalated into an eternal romance. The worst part about this is that their romance is entirely based on appearances considering the insta-love. It still surprises me how fast this transition went.

*I was given a ARC via Netgalley from the publisher in exchange for an honest review*

Daniel Graham died to be a Protector of the Night to guard the living from their nightmares. For decades, he's been a Protector invisible from the ones he's protecting. Now assigned to Kayla Bartlett, a sixteen year old psychiatric ward patient is harder than he imagined. Nightmares love the troubled past victims and there's something about Kayla that's not adding up. So when Daniel breaks the number one rule and introduces himself to Kayla they whisk off to Rome for answers. Out of nowhere, Kayla gets kidnapped and its up to Daniel to find her no matter the cost.

First of all, this cover is Gorgeous and relates to the plot extremely well. I came across this book from a Goodreads Listopia and fell in love with the cover. I know, I know "Don't judge a book by its cover" but I can't help it. I read the synopsis and found out that the author was from my hometown so I knew I had to give this a go.

I didnt love this, I didnt hate it. Overall, this was meh. The main issue was the love interest aspect. The romance is just extra insta, insta-love which makes it hard to bypass to believe and enjoy the plot. Daniel literally falls for Kayla in ten seconds flat. There were times where Daniel was too feminine and I thought we were in Kayla's head.

Also, the plot seemed very predictable. At times, it was but there were a few instances were I was caught off guard and I liked the new direction.

Kayla was my favorite character. She was demanding but had the right to be. She didnt fall for Daniel as quickly as he did for her. And even though she wasnt able to protect herself well, she didnt give up.

Dreamcatchers, Dreamweavers, and Nightmares, not as in just nightmares that one has while asleep but actual beings that are called Nightmares. If these terms alone don’t have your interested peaked then maybe you should just keep reading or maybe you should ask yourself why in the world would that not spark your interest, either way right into the book at the first sentence my attention was gotten and my attention was held all the way through this book. I have never read a book based around dreams people have. The concept of having actual demon beings that are called nightmares invade my dreams in order to force me to have a nightmare is a very unique, creative way of thinking. Not only is that creative but the whole concept behind it with the dreamcatchers, who fight off the nightmares once they come to those humans asleep in their peaceful dreams. Their duty is to kill off the nightmares without them interfering with the dreamweavers, which are the other realm beings who give us humans our good dreams. We all know and can name probably several books in which good take on evil and this is another side of that only this side of good versus evil is done while we sleep. Protectors of Night are like the angels and the Nightmares are the evil demons or devils or whatever other evil names you can come up with. You can only become a Protector of Night, or rather a DreamCatcher, one must have sacrificed his life for the sake of others. It’s like the ultimate sacrifice you can give on earth is rewarded with becoming a DreamCatcher in the afterlife. I was really fascinated with this book all the way around. From the concept, to the details, through the entirety of the book in all its adventures. This is a must read book (at least to me it is)!!!Read more ›
