Tame, but Better Than Watching Paint Dry

This is one of those historical films which manage to (per the end-titles) manage to combine characters and invent events for dramatic purposes but which still come across as ... surprisingly dull. Still, unlike many others, it is better than watching grass grow.
The story is simple: a baseball player at the end of his career moves into the OSS and finds desk work unendurable. So, he is given a field assignment: find Prof Heisenberg and, if that scientist is creating a German atomic bomb, kill him.
Which sounds great and there is a bit of action early on when he and his companions (which is headed by an Army officer of sufficient rank to get past minor things that MP roadblocks) find themselves in a small firefight in the taking of Rome.
But that's about it. The other action is basically a dinner party, and an interview.
It doesn't help that none of these people are easy to recognize from scene to scene -- or , better, that they are all similar enough that they are easily confused, for of course they look a bit different from one another. But you have to suppose that the Catcher is who you are watching just because you are watching him (as opposed to because you actually recognize him) all too often.
Somebody gets shot at the end, but who it is is unclear. Perhaps its the Impolite Rude Woman who livened up the dinner party. If so, the host, who appeared to be her husband, is awfully calm when he sees this. But that story is not followed up on.
If you like this sort of thing better than I do, you will probably enjoy the film, because it is well done.

I have so enjoyed Paul Rudd in the many comedies he has made. He has had me in stitches. Plus he is easy to look at. But he ,it turns out, can hold your attention in a drama. Bravo to Mr Rudd for The Catcher Was A Spy. I loved it and I loved him in it.

The only reason we hesitated about watching this movie was that we were concerned that we wouldn't be able to take Paul Rudd seriously. He proved us wrong WONDERFULLY! This was such a well-written story with sharp, intelligent dialogue about an extremely interesting man who was one in a million! Based on a true story, it kept us on the edge of our seats throughout, and we were so happy that we watched it! Highly recommend it and hope you like it as much as we did!

the americans and british were uncertain if heisenberg was developing an atomic bomb for germany. moe berg , had to decide if heisenberg was a good guy and would not do this and could not do this. he was a brilliant person and baseball player and spy and given the task to find out what was going on and kill heisenberg if there was a chance his talent could kill millions of people. moe berg had a beautiful girlfriend in this film, that he loved very much and when he was afraid he would die, he called her.this is who he chose. so, i don't understand what people are saying. moe told the army, he could keep a secret. possibly that means for others.

Recommended for Bond lovers. After some hunting I managed to track this down as a Hiroyuki Sanada fan. This is a nice mellow film which is a bit disjointed but rewards repeated viewing. It’s a lot like a ‘pretty boys’ film, just lovely men all the way through, really nicely filmed and acted which travels everywhere from Rome to the baseball stadium in Japan.
This doesn’t have English subs so you have to sit through some multi lingual scenes helplessly.
