I ride early mornings usually and drivers around here are NOT bike friendly OR alert. I looked at a LOT of rear lights and this one, IMHO, is the MOST visible. Runs on two AA batteries (I use rechargeables), it has a few different patterns (blinking, solid, hyper blink, etc.) and the the six LEDs pointing backward are augmented by LEDs on each side, which is a GREAT addition and rare among bike lights. That gives you bright red light for 180 degrees (actually a bit more). Attaches securely to my seat post (under my repair kit) and turns on and off with a simple click of a button. Changing batteries, while rare, is no big deal and takes about 1 minute to just twist off one end, swap out the batteries and twist it back on.
When I ride in groups, they put me at the back (ok, I am also a bit slow...) because people DO see this light! My wife even makes me use it in daylight (and I don't object much, the tough triathlete in me wants to live to play with my grandkids) because it stands out and wakes up sleepy motorists just putt putting along in their 5,000 pound missile of death. Of course, if they are aiming at me, they have a nice sight picture too....
Well, moving right along. Easy to use, bright, multiple lighting patterns, 180+ degrees of visibility, bright enough to use in daylight too, secure mounting. The bummer is, I have heard Cateye discontinued it! Buy it now while you can!!!!
To finish, each of those bubbles on the lens tend to focus the light from that particular LED, so when tilted slightly up and to the left you are certain to obtain the attention of any traffic coming up behind you.
A product I can count on using day or night I'm happy to have found this replacement.
This light takes two AA batteries. Purr-fect for me because I use a lot of rechargeable AA batteries around the house. If the ones that I use go bad, I can easily replace them. There are two buttons, one for the top row and the other for the bottom. Each row has a total of five lights (two on each sides and three facing front). I like that you can choose to have either row on separately or both at the same time for full brightness.
What I’d wish they included was the flex tight strap. Nonetheless, it’s a great light.
Otherwise the LEDs are bright enough and I like the moving pattern mode you can set. Much better than a single red light.
1. Very bright LEDs
2. Rear and side-pointing LEDs so there is 270 degree visibility
3. Uses AA batteries, not lower capacity AAA or coin cells.
4. Lots of mounting options. I like mounting them to the light/reflector brackets that are present on many rear luggage racks.
5. Water resistant.
The con is that it is rather expensive.
Haven't purchased a rear bike light before and doubt that unless something happens to this one that I will need to again as seems to be very well made and is better than I have seen on my rides through the city of Austin on other bikes.
