Editorial Reviews
Review
"This marvelous book recreates the building of a French Gothic cathedral from the hewing down of half a forest to the placement of the last sheet of lead on the spire. Macaulay uses voluminous knowledge and pen-and-ink sketches accompanied by a brief clear narrative." Time Magazine

I've needed this handy little guide for decades. After studying art and architecture in college..I seemed to have missed details like the cutting of forests and the flattening of blown glass, all for lists of dates and names of architects. A simple read..oh, and men walking in huge wheels hauling up stone hundreds of feet. Never knew that one!

I loved all these books as a kid and as an adult I get to have the book I could only check out of the library as a kid. The thing I loved about these was how Macaulay uses a mixture of history and fiction to bring to life the creation of these amazing structures. It was fascinating to learn not just how these building were built, the methods, materials and tools, but also the why.
The new version is illustrated in color bringing the story even more vividly to life that the original I read 40 years ago.

The book gave good answers to anticipated questions, which kept a young reader interested. Enough facts to draw one into the days of cathedral building long ago.
I would recommend the book to those young readers who love facts and stories of fictional places directly tied to historical settings.
I gave it 3 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️ for a good read that is well written. Its illustrations are well placed and help the young reader see the description of many of the construction phases of the cathedral.

I have his original Cathedral, the black and white drawings. I had thought these were watercolors, and was curious. Colored pencil, and very so-so. I am giving it 3 stars because I can't do worse to David Mac -- but really, the original is priceless and this one is 'meh.'

My son chose this for his independent reading selection, and I ended up reading it too! Lol. It is very interesting to read and see the degree of commitment that those hold when something is important to them, regardless of the obstacles that are thrown in their way! Great story of perseverance and determination against many things adverse to your goal! Plus, my son loved hearing about the various "tools" and ways of the ancient builders.

Wonderful information and beautiful drawings. Used as a teaching aide (along with the animated video not included) when I taught middle school social studies.

Nice gift for a young lady who likes to learn about cathedrals. Personally, I would have like more vibrant pictures but the original sketches and descriptions is what she was looking for! Overall, a perfect gift!

The graphic artist for these books originally did them as black and white sketches. The color versions really bring them alive.

Reviewed in Japan on November 8, 2020Verified Purchase

Don't ever buy the Kindle version!
Reviewed in Japan on May 19, 2013Verified Purchase
It's a great book in paper. But in the Kindle version, the (all-important) pictures are of terrible quality. All drawings are fuzzy and letters are illegible. Don't waste your money!
