Catherine Definitive Edition. List of Changes
Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2020
This is basically the same game released in 2011 with some added changes; namely a new love interest Rin or Catherine with a Q? Qatherine. So now the love triangle is now a love square.Similar concept to Persona 3 and 4 with Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 Golden. New added story lines and some game play tweaks. Before I go through list of changes, let's go through the basic premise of the game:Very story heavy, slice of life game.Gameplay revolve around playing a Q-bert style puzzle platformer game where you push, pull and maneuver blocks to dodge traps and climb a crumbling tower to reach the top.You enter these puzzle segments when our main protagonist Vincent (no relation) gets nightmares at night about his fiance Katherine since he's not willing to commit to marrying her (along with having possible feelings with Catherine and Rin), and has to climb a tower before whatever chasing him catches him and kills him.Rumor around the bar says that if you die in your dreams you die in real life like the 'Nightmare on Elm street' movie (unless you play on the new safety mode). When you reach the top, you are put into a confession booth where you answer questions about your relationship moving this 'order and freedom' (good and evil, morality type meter) that helps determine what 1 of 13 possible endings you'll eventually get. Climbing the tower is a metaphor for what Vincent is experiencing in real life.During the day you partake in interacting with NPCs at the Stray Sheep bar, taking to Kathrine, Catherine and/or Rin, and answering text on your phone. That may or may not influence the morality meter. There's this supernatural element in the game also that revolves around Catherine, and a mystery of why everyone getting nightmares and dying from them---Now onto the list of changes I've noticed:1. QatherineOr Rin for short. New female(?) love interest. Like Katherine (with a K) lives in the real world. Bumps into your main protagonist Vincent, who finds out she has amnesia and homeless(?). You help her get a job at the bar/pizza joint and is conveniently your new next door neighbor.Rin is integrated into the story well. She's put in very naturally like she was part of deleted scenes or extended cut of the original game and doesn't feel tacked on.Unlike Catherine, you needs to go out of their way to begin a relationship with Rin.On day 6, choosing certain options will begin Rin's branch of the story. If you do not want to go through it for some reason (if you don't swing that way), then the original story plays out but with options of 2 more possible endings (total) for Catherine and Katherine2. New songs.Added soundtrack. Juke box in bar now includes new Persona songs released after 2011.3. Remix modesThose who are familiar with/memorize the puzzles; there are now remixed puzzles dubbed "Arrange mode" to make the game feel new.4. 180 degree rotationWhen you go behind a block, the camera auto rotates 180 degrees5. Edge highlighterWhen you go into a block there's a blue highlights that tells you where you can traverse.6. New photo/textNew photo and text conversations during cell phone segments7. New cutscenes/ ending20 new animated cutsceneOnes for Katherine, Catherine flush out the characters more. Katherine now feels less bossy and more empathetic5 new endings: Rin True Ending Rin Good Ending Rin Bad Ending Catherine Alternate Ending Katherine Alternate Ending8. New patrons to the barTwo new characters who enter the Stray Sheep bar; Roderick and Abul. Shows up during Vincent's nightmares9. New easier, safety mode. For those who just want to enjoy the story. No game overs, no time limit, able to skip puzzles, option to let cpu autoplay10. Time freeze mechanicRin's piano has the power to freeze collapsing stage, activated automatically when Vincent is in an emergency in certain stages. A green light appears as the piano's melody is heard.11. 500 new stagesSome part of remixed stages as mentioned before. Also new stages in Rapunzel mini-game which has been renamed "Super Rapunzel". Mini game also has Standard and Arrange mode12. Online battle modeAble to play ranked or random matchesOverall fun Q-bert style puzzle platformer with a choose your own adventure game. Know that the game is very story heavy and may not interest some.
