Format: Hardcover
The book examines seventeenth and eighteenth century continuation of Tridentine considerations of faith and reason (scholasticism), dogma, ideology, appropriate degree of liberty, women's role, education, monasticism, conversion of colonial and Asian peoples, treatment of superstition (not same as mysteries and miracles) and the church-state relationship in each European nation. Particularly interesting and detailed are the roles of Pombal in Portugal and Joseph II in Austria. Implications of the French revolution are not neglected. There is very interesting interaction of an enlightened Church with Jansenism, Ultramontanism, Deism and other ideas outside mainstream Catholicism. Lehner presents works and personalities of a litany of enlightened reformers. Takeaways include successive popes proving more conservative than might be expected and capitalism, not considered a moral economic system, increasing inequality, while generally raising living standards for the poor. Later it serves as background for a discussion of Vatican II reforms, while there is only a passing allusion to Pope Francis as a reformer. The missing periods before and after the Council of Trent and the period from Napoleon to Vatican II indicate that Lehner views Church history as only sporadically enlightened.
It's an excellent detailed history, very informative though perhaps not as forgotten as he implies.
See Wikipedia for a short summary on the topic.
The book could easily be twice as long. I'd like to read more by this author.
