Before I go further, I want to say that I have a great deal of respect for the author/artist. Just google his name and go to his web site, and you can see that he does stunnng work with landscapes, in both watercolor and with graphite. And so I know he is an extraordinary artist, and what I'm about to say is not to disrespect that, but to give feedback to others who are looking to improve their abilities to render pet portraits.
This is literally a book I bought for its cover, in part because there was no view of the inside contents. And the cover illustration is indeed very well done. But the great majority of drawings in the book are just not at that level--to the point that it almost seems like they are not done by the same artist. Rather, many appear actively amateurish. Although I consider myself still well in the learning stages of drawing and painting (and far from possessing the masterful technique that is evident in Mr. Petterson's work as shown on his website) I would honestly be embarrassed if I drew many of the pictures that are in the book--and I'm not talking about the studies. Often times, there is a weirdness to drawing--the proportions and expressions seem off. In many instances, especially in graphite, the texture of the fur is strange. Often there is an outline to the fur that is very amateurish. Since I bought the book especially for help in rendering fur, this is a disappointment.
And yet: there are a few really good pages. In seeming contradition to the badly rendered fur in much of the book, the page on "Capturing Layers of Hair" in water-soluable pencil was really good. Likewise, "Drawing Mouths" was also useful. The drawing on "Drawing the Whole Head" was lovely and there were some interesting gestural drawings. I just wish there were more drawings here that I would want to emulate.
A postscript: I believe another reviewer mentioned that most of the drawings are done in charcoal or chalk/pastel and I didn't find that to be the case at all. I'd say most of the drawings in the book are done in either graphite or colored pencil/water-soluable colored pencil. There are also quite a few that done in ink or marker.
